Hopeless Romance

Hopeless Romance

A Poem by Courtney

How did he evolve

into the good-looking lover

on the embossed five-inch cover

with one leg resting on a stone,

bent at the knee,

shiny cutlass slung at his side,

conditioned hair flapping

awaiting the reader

with his lustful eyes—

majestic,

from a rotting-toothed criminal

disloyal and uneducated

short, rusty blade

with a broken handle

dripping with the blood

of a noble Englishman

protecting his family?

The leg is bent, yes,

but at an angle from a break

and caked blood

scabs over infection

as flies circle—

feasting.

He only consorts with w****s,

the only prize he gains

from his thievery,

and the only prize

who’ll have him.

So read on, dreamer

and set yourself up

for a lasting disappointment

and the forever wanting

of a man who’ll never come.

The greatest love story of all-time. Thank you for this. I was wondering why the picture said pleasuring a pirate...I should read before I question anything. Well done, darlin. An interesting idea, surrounded by honesty and reality. I wish the idea of that "perfect someone" would go away.
