My Friend, Colored InA Poem by CourtneyFor Audrey and Dudesy-Paloodzy-Tom Squoodsy (the cat)I drew a picture of you yesterday. You were sitting on your cement porch gazing at the sky colored a blue-grey with highlights of pink-orange, as if it had been streaked with an artist's hand, his tool, a plucked Indian Paintbrush. I shaded in your hair, then your skin golden-tan, your cheeks rosy with blush.
The evening sky holds your hopes of life elsewhere, apprehension has gradually disappeared. Each stumble of a loved one beyond repair has kicked away all previous fear of uncertainty, the unknown, the strange. Your mind no longer clouded with what-ifs. You're sick of so-called friends who'll never change. Nothing could be worse than this.
Your eyes say it all, colored with green lead. I shaded your body with ease and patience, then began working on your sweater with red but quickly realized that that color didn't make sense. Red didn't suit you; you'd never worn it before, so I erased and this time blended orange with yellow. A color of the eighties, I knew you'd like this more, but so you wouldn't stand out, I kept it mellow.
Your hand lingers over a stainless steel bowl of food; beside you awaits the outside cat. The snake-like pupils convey her uptmost gratitude. For her always-gleaming coat, I only use black. But your thoughts are far from that cold concrete; your eyes point towards the sky. Above the privacy fence, even the old pecan tree, in the clouds, you see a new life. © 2008 CourtneyAuthor's Note
