The Ducks

The Ducks

A Poem by J. James Reider

Ducks, ducks, ducks!  I see an army of ducks.

Quack, quack, quack!  All I hear is quack, quack, quack.

Get back ducks!  Silence!  Give my ears some slack.

Two by two.  Over my head, down my back.

Ducks, ducks, ducks!  Go away you ducks!

Quack, quack, quack!  To my front, to my back.

All over the place, ducks are all I see!

Why 'o why?  Why won't you just let me be?

Ducks, ducks, ducks!  Eating muffins, eating bread.

Quack, quack, quack!  It echos within my head!

Ducks enough to fill seven dozen trucks,

mile upon mile of ducks, ducks, ducks.

A sign at the lake said, "Don't feed the ducks!"

I bought some bread, it was only two bucks.

Fed some to one, a cute little mallard,

within five minutes; two hundred had gathered!

Ducks, ducks, ducks!  Walking, quacking, feathered sea!

Quack, quack, quack!  Who told them the bread was free?

The next time I decide to spend a few bucks,

I'll buy a paper instead of feeding the ducks!

Written 11-18-2007. My first attempt at a children's poem. I worry about the child's annunciation of the word "ducks," so this will never make it beyond this post here.

Okay, Call me an immature idiot, but I'm still laughing over the image of a bunch of kids attempting to say "Duck" and the word becoming eroded to something a little more crude. In any case, I liked this poem quite a lot. It has a humor to it that would truly appeal to children, so I see no reason why you shouldn't attempt publishing the piece.

What a fun and entertaining piece but with a great message... you give to someone and you could have everyone asking for something. Very cool!!

before everything, i wanna say thank you for the review and advice! Thanks a lot! :)

as for the review:
AHAHAHAHAHAHA!
(ducks are really annoying at times)

Wonderful, Humor-filled poem, nice play with words (Walking, quacking, feathered sea!), nice imagery, I wonder how people with ornithophobia would manage. :)

It's nice that you have captured some simple things in life and turn it to fun poetry! Great work! (no wonder this piece is very popular with reviewers)

I can picture a new variant to the chicken dance...

and this time, they should take the do not feed sign seriously...

great piece, I am actually laughing at it...

btw, which piece was about the pigeons by the apartment window? I loved that piece.

Definitely made me laugh by the end. It's perfect for a child; it'll help teach them pronunciation if anything. :)

Your children's poems are too good not to be shared.
I need to try these out my my grandchildren ( 5 & 3) and measure their reaction.
And with all that said...
''!'''''!'''...

This is a welcome relief after reading 'Beacon'! It's a fun poem, conjuring up a picture of one.. two.. three... then,. two hundred and a sprinling of crumbs, then, WHAM the crack of a newspaper on your knees to get rid of those pesky ducks, ducks, ducks! And the pic you've created is so true.. ducks or whatever birds can be like locusts when food's about!

Your meter, your phrases, as always, are very fine and this would make a great poem for children... except the paper bit maybe... that make the sensitive ones upset!

Ducks, ducks, ducks! Eating muffins, eating bread.
Quack, quack, quack! It echos within my head!
Ducks enough to fill seven dozen trucks,
mile upon mile of ducks, ducks, ducks.

That made me laugh aloud...

Thanks lots for sharing.

I love this! Too funny. (: I feel like this is constantly happening to me, because I'm just too nice to deny a cute bird some food. XD Favorite lines: "Fed some to one, a cute little mallard, / within five minutes; two hundred had gathered!" Nice! I loved reading this - great job! =)

You did very well with it. It reads like a Dr Seuss tale. I would not worry to much about the annunciation, they will work it out. this should be shared.

There is one small point, although "echos" is correct in spelling "echoes" is the common spelling. for a children's poem it might be better to go with the common.
