Flashback

I remember everything about that night. How her beautiful brunette hair fell between my fingers, the night I met Kate. It was the middle of November and there she stood in the middle of that vacant parking lot. The darkness of night prevented even the strongest of eyes from seeing past the street lights. The trees trembled in the wind. She stood there shivering, I couldn’t just stand there I had to say something. “Are you all right, you don’t seem too good” I said to her as casually as possible. She turned to look at me “I’m just a little cold, I lost my jacket inside.” She said while struggling to keep her hair from blowing in the wind. “Here take this” I said while offering her my jacket. For some reason I was drawn to this girl, this girl whom I had never seen before, but was so quick to give the clothes off my back to. “Are you sure” she said sounding concerned “I wouldn’t want you to get cold, I mean, I just met you”. I thought to myself she was right, I had just met her, and I was going to get cold but there was something about her, I would have given her anything she asked for that night. I handed her my jacket, she threw the jacket over her small shoulders onto her body. The jacket looked huge over her small, tight shirt. She looked over and noticed that I was shivering, she shyly moved closer to me until our sides became two snakes coiled up together. The wind climbed up my back but I didn’t feel the cold, I was close to her, she was all I felt.

This morning I would have shuddered at the idea of being out at 3 a.m. with an almost complete stranger. “Are you still cold?” I barely managed to get the words out. “I’m okay, thank you. It’s nice to get out of there, I hate parties” she pointed to the house we had just come out of, it seemed to be the only light for miles besides dim streetlights. “You don’t look like a party girl” I stopped nervously “I’m not saying you couldn’t party if you wanted t"“I uttered out through my nervousness. She was laughing, probably at me being so nervous. It was the middle of autumn, but my embarrassment caused two flowers to bloom on my cheeks turning my cheeks a light pink. “You’re cute” she put on the most beautiful smile I had ever seen. Her voice traveled out into the empty parking lot.

We saw two people walk out of the party. It was a young guy and girl they had been arguing, something about him and alcohol and some other chick. Than the girl walked over and said. “Kate, I’m going, you coming with?” She had been talking to the girl I gave my jacket to. Kate moved closer to me and said “Sorry Tiff, I'm not ready to go yet”. The girl Kate had addressed as Tiff walked away. I didn’t realize at first but I was blushing. “Mind if I ask why you didn’t go with her?” I let the words slip out casually. “My friends have dragged me to millions of these parties, and I have to say you’re the only person I’ve enjoyed meeting at any of them so far. I couldn’t help but smile. She smiled back at me and I was hypnotized by her amazing teeth beaming at me, beautiful lips teasing mine saying catch me if you can and two perfect dimples. “I feel for you, my friends always drag me out to these lame parties too, I’ve seen thousands of girls at these parties but I have to say you’ve got the best smile I have ever seen.” Her hazel eyes that were lit up by the reflection from the street light above us met mine and she showed me that amazing smile I had just complimented as she said “how would you like a closer view?.” Suddenly everything in that empty parking lot came to life, the trees were dancing, and the wind was singing for us. The asphalt below us became a stage as she leaned over and her lips so warm, so moist, met mine. I ran my fingers through her hair. The smell of her shampoo filled my nose. A cold wind blew past and she pulled me closer as if to keep her warm. My hands, as if they were lost travelers made their way nervously down her back until they set up camp at her sides. As she pulled her head back she smiled at me and her deep hazel eyes stared into mine. The wind around us was singing a harmonious chorus. The sound of the crickets songs were drowned out by my heartbeat. I had wished the moment would last forever.

After a moment of silence she said what I hoped she would not ask. “What brings you out here?” “It’s a long story” I said gently, “I’ve got time” she said shooting that smile at me again over powering me with it. “Are you going to use that smile of yours on me all night?” She laughed and then I felt her get closer and her arms around me. “I'm getting comfortable for the story” she said playfully. “My dad has been hitting the bottles since the day I was born and he’s really abusive” the words had hurt, it felt as if they dropped straight out of my mouth onto my feet. I had never said that out loud to anyone before now and here I am saying it for the first time to someone I barely know. “ He comes home drunk, and in a bad mood, he smacks me around some times, my mother gets it worse though, I try to stick up for her but he beats me and her harder when I do. About eight years ago mother couldn’t take it anymore, she got a terrible beating standing up for me because my father almost caused my death. She left and I haven’t heard from her since, so some nights like tonight I just leave, I can’t stay there with him all the time, he’s just to miserable of a guy ever since mom left. Her face changed.

We stayed silent for about a minute. We were no longer alone in the parking lot, some cars had pulled in but no one had gotten out of them yet, Shades of dark orange were bursting out from the east over the mountains. The sun was coming up. “What time is it?” she asked, I checked my watch, it was already five forty six in the morning I thought. “Almost a quarter to six”. “I have to go, will I see you again” she asked sounding hopeful. “I’ll be here again next week, I promise” I said smiling. I couldn’t stop my knees from wobbling as she said “don’t be late” smiling as she disappeared into the street that was now blanketed in morning traffic.
