They’re all welcome!
Envy is a little fat, has to squeeze in through the door
as if it were a narrow turn stile.
Beauty allows Self-esteem to enter first.
Doubt seems more sure of himself than we ever remember
him being
since the last girlfriend and the fiasco.
There are the little ones: Acceptance in her pretty Easter dress
and Gentleness taking the shape of a fawn,
with a drop of dew on her dark nose,
trembling: reminding us all of the first time
we fell in love.
Hopelessness comes preaching doom. Nobody minds.
Everybody smiles and passes him the avocado dip,
and a few of the smallest hide his coat
in an upper room.
The Lord comes. He’s wearing denim and doesn’t talk much.
He gets involved in a Pictionary game
and wins by drawing the only picture
of the Trinity
anyone has ever seen.
I’m there. My date for the night is Laughter.
She’s true to her name, guffawing, spilling wine
on the floor.
I take her back to my place after the party,
and she makes love to me
as I’ve never deserved—
but here is Doubt getting in the last word.
