THE ARDUOUS JOURNEY OF (WRECKLESS) TEENAGE ANGST

THE ARDUOUS JOURNEY OF (WRECKLESS) TEENAGE ANGST

A Poem by Kenny L. Mitchell

“THE ARDUOS JOURNEY OF (WRECKLESS) TEENAGE ABANDON”

Long past the plastic Barbie

And remote control GoBot (phase)

We demand the respect

You so ritualistically deny

WE DON’T NEED NO EDUCATION!

As we pump our fist in the air

The crystal clear methodic ANGST

Plays so clearly on our MP3/Cellular/Ipod/gizmo

(we didn’t pay for)

You are so clueless and so STUPID

Do you even REALIZE how clueless

You truly are?

You try to reign me in with your

Archaic, stylistic, religious approach

Only to prove how hypocritical

And insensitive you have become

Listen closely to the following:

Who has f&#&ed up the ozone?

Who has basically bankrupted my future?

Who preaches peace yet goes to war

(AGAIN & AGAIN)?

Let me give you a little clue

It’s all about you

We ultimately become that

Which we fear the most

What keeps me up at night?

What is the demon that paralyzes me

What is the ticking time bomb

That fuels the base hatred that

Pumps my anxious, beautiful heart?

The fear that despite my best intentions

Despite my wholehearted loathing

Of the society/anarchy you’ve built

That one day years from now

I’ll look in the mirror

And see the pale/sickening/distorted/visual

Of what I truly hate the most

…you

Oh, Kenny, I love this. Teens who read this are saying it word for word to their parents and pumping their fists in agreement, and we who have the privilege of looking back shake our heads and laugh in abashment. Why, oh why, did we believe such things? Probably so you could create a timeless work like this. Lovely.

Oh, very true! Rebels with a cause we may be, but ten years from now who knows if we'll be able to elude the bureaucratic, paper-shuffling van-driving suburban apathetic craziness that seems so impossible at this moment. Very well written :)
