"midnight epiphanies"

"midnight epiphanies"

A Poem by Kenny L. Mitchell

“midnight epiphanies”

There is a melancholy truth

That permeates my soul

Nothing & no one

Can survive on its own

The mythical epiphany came

As I hugged a silken pillow

Alone in a wine sodden bed

Grasping the raw emptiness

The clumsy shadows of memory

That fade in the stark light of truth

The pale taste of your kiss

Has long since become rancid

The acidic similarity of tear drops

Wincing at the faded photos

That sits across a dusty dresser

I am haunted by the possibility

Of what might have been

The slamming of a door

Ended the dull illusion

Of what we used to be

Along the jettisoned memories

Floats the foul stench of pride

Watermarked by jaded tears

As I fall upwards into the sky

The burning crimson sunrise

Brings no solace to my brow

 As raindrops fall

A tear streak pattern

Against my ashen face

I shudder to my resolution

The fear of one heart’s

(leaving)

Is never enough

To make another heart

(stay)

Very sad undertones but full of raw emotions. Made me think of the saying "we most want what we can not have".. when alone we are more prone to reflect, regret and evaluate what life and love mean the most to each's own. You get a real feeling of loneliness and realization that much can and does slip through one's hands like time. This was a really humane poem.. it's those sad moments that make us appreciate the better ones.. nicely done!

Your words make even sadness and pain beautiful.

Oh how bittersweet, the beautiful moments turned sour - so clearly. It makes me sad that such beauty can become such an awful thing to our hearts.

Black words created by a golden tongue. You have gained a spot on my favorite shelf. Bleak and beautiful. I am trying my best to write a review, but you have me utterly speechless.

So sad but so real. There is always a sadness to have a relationship end especially when it is no fault of your own. This is a great piece Kenny.

This has struck very close to home, as my wife recently kicked me to the curb. The only greater loneliness, I imagine, is to feel compelled to stay in a relationship where both parties acknowledge the love is dead...Good image, of the photos on the dusty dresser, speaking to the lack of care of what once was cherished. You might check out my sonnet, "Fear" ,for a different take on a similar topic. Wonderful job, my friend. Hope it all works out in the end.

Wow Kenny, that was amazing. So much so I favorited it. You chose the right words, that made it a very poetic and flowing piece.

And John Donne said, "No man is an island" but he still hasn't explained why my tourists come and go with the warm and rainy seasons leaving me surrounded in water every time. Great write Kenny, sort of sad but nice to read. I still believe things and people can exist alone. I think some of us are always alone, no matter what.
