"My Greatest Adventure..."

"My Greatest Adventure..."

A Poem by Kenny L. Mitchell

“My Greatest Adventure…”

From the moment my eyes

Held upon your delicate face

I knew I’d love you more

Than life itself

Your heart completed my own

My blood flows through your veins

My son, my heart, my all

Still waters run deep

And the sacred bond of family

Can never be denied or dissolved

What fecund tears of happiness

Ran across my hapless face

The road to eternity seemed boundless

As I knew that you would echo my destiny

As father and son we played as children

Cementing the beautiful recourse of love

That naturally blossomed between our hearts

As time unfolded neatly upon itself

And as you grew into a self enabled man

My heart exploded as fireworks across the sky

With immeasurable pride and sheer happiness

As the sun echoes across the elegant decades

I find that my hairs have grown silently gray

While you have become a mirror reflection

Of the young man I saw in less repeated days

If I were to convey to you one piece

Of prerequisite wisdom or sage advice

Is to always cherish your wonders years

The profound beauty of today

Is that it can stretch beyond eternity

If you allow the love of your heart

To permeate each aspect of your reality

My loving son and strong young warrior

Take to task each lovely scent and syntax

Realize that the pontification of politics

Is only a desolate distraction

To our divine CREATOR’S manifest destiny

Only LOVE’S eloquent inebriation

Will allow the beauty of your life

To reach the appropriate apex

It is so beautifully predicted to become

Until the stars fall silently

Into the serene oceans

You will always be my son

My reason for rising each day

And simply my greatest adventure

Kenny,
knowing your history with him, I am totally speechless. Never have I read (ever) a finer, deeply loving tribute to a child. This boy/manchild is you and vice versa. The Creator will wind your roads together very soon, this I know. Excellent, excellent write.

This is a deeply profound write of a loving father. Kenny, you have poured your heart out in this tribute. Someday your son will read it and love it no doubt.

It is a blessing I have never known, Kenny, this blessing of being a parent, so I cannot in truth begin to fathom what it truly means to see your Eternity, wrapped in a blanket and attached to his mother's breast. This poem, however, brings my heart nearer to the knowledge of that experience than anything ever has.If I may offer the minutest critique, though, I might suggest that in future works, you sought to avoid overrused or cliched phrases--the one that caught my eye first was "still waters run deep".But this is an insignificant blemish, on this most profound tribute of a man to his son. A tribute this son (myself) apparently never merited...
