"words"

"words"

A Poem by Kenny L. Mitchell

“words”

My words are sharp

Jagged tools

That allow me to

Protect and deflect

The exteriors of my

Broken heart

Sinister claws that

Persuade others to genuflect

The stunted wounded child

They have less charitably

Left behind

The songs of summer

Buzz sideways into my brain

Leaving me disenchanted

And uncaring in my resolve

Once upon a dusty memory

My heart longed for

Her sweet summer’s kiss

The rapid increase of my pulse

And the wonderful wisp

Of her sweetest perfumes

Now along this dark jaded road

I only miss the presence of

The rising sun

And the desolate illusion

Of what might have been

A part of my soul

Will always cling

To the weary shades

The distinctive memory of you

I now drown

In a river of sequential tears

My lungs tend to burst

From the salty ruins

Of broken dreams & continuity

I slip into a watery grave

Longing for the sweet

Oblivion to take

Me onward
