Chapter One: Confrontation
Nicki It was a beautiful summer. I didn't want it to ever end. School only meant one thing for me, and that was drama, stress and usually led to romance which I often found difficult. All the guys in my life weren't what they were supposed to be. They ended up breaking my heart, and making me wish I had never ended up in a relationship. I had told myself this school year would be different. I wouldn't let my heart be so open, but instead keep my heart shut to anyone that may appear in my life. I don't think I knew then how hard that would be in the future. "Nicki, you there?" I cocked my head to see who it was, and saw my best friend, Lavenly strolling towards me. She had her long blonde hair back in a simple ponytail, and her bangs were swooshed to the side. She was wearing her favorite dark green Aeropostale outfit which matched her flashing eyes. "Hey, Lav. How did you find me here?"
She smiled sneakily. I looked off at the quiet lake. Once in a while, I saw a fish jump in the air, making the slightest ripple. "I was exploring the woods once, and came upon this place. It used to be my secret hideout." "Nicki," she began, changing the subject. She was looking down at her feet that hung lazily over the side. She happened to be wearing my blue sketchers. We liked to borrow shoes from each other. "Are you excited for the new school year?" I picked up a smooth rock, and tossed it in the water. I didn't like talking of school or anything in particular. I never had looked forward to it nor had I enjoyed it. "Honestly, no. I feel like I don't have any friends, and everyone ignores me. I'm like nonexistent." She became silent, but then cheerfully reminded me, "You have me, remember?" I smiled, and locked my arm with hers. "Always." "Now I'm just hoping the school year doesn't start off so dramatic as last year. Remember when Karli poured her bottle of lemonade all over your head?" Lavenly laughed. I nudged her shoulder. "That's not funny. Remember when you tripped over your own chair? You fell flat on your face." "Well, at least Marcus helped me up. He was so romantic, and handsome." "Yeah, and then we later found out he had a girlfriend." She nudged me so hard, I lost my balance, and fell right into the lake, scaring plenty of fish. "Now, you're going to get it!" I shouted, jumping out onto the dock. My elbow length hair was completely drenched in salty water, and my mascara was making black streams down my heart shaped face. She screamed, and sprinted away. I laughed, and hurried after her. All of a sudden, someone appeared in front of me, and before I could stop myself, I ran right into the person. We both fell to the ground. "I'm sorry," I apologized, quickly standing up. "I didn't mean to--" Then I stopped as I was looking into sparkling blue eyes. I couldn't find my tongue as he stood to his full height, and smiled softly, making two dimples appear. "That's alright. It was my fault. I should of been watching where I was going," he replied and ran a hand through his thick brown hair. Lavenly appeared beside me suddenly. "Hi," she said, batting her eyelashes, and quickly glancing at the handsome stranger. "Oh, dear," I thought. I could already tell that Lavenly was falling-- and fast-- for him already. He gave Lavenly a sideways glance, but looked back at me again. I suddenly became self-conscious of what I looked like. I began wiping the mascara from my blushing cheeks. It smeared, making it worse. "Well, I better be going. Nice meeting you both," the guy said with a smile. We both watched as he diappeared behind some trees. Lavenly immediately started bubbling with enthusiasm. I knew her all too well. "Who was that?" she bubbled. "Did you see how handsome he was? Oh, and how genuinely sweet." "How would you know?" I teased. "We barely met him." "I'm a good personality reader," she replied in mock defense. "Oh, really?" Then a thought struck me. I hadn't even asked his name. © 2011 Kelly M.Author's Note
