2) Car AccidentA Chapter by Kelly M.
Thoughts of the night of my mother's accident flooded back to my mind. I ran outside, trying to find my way in the darkness. I had to get away of all those memories I wished to push away. I found myself on the large rock in my backyard which was where Jackson and I had first met. I squeezed my eyes shut, but it didn't help. The tears slipped down my cheeks.
"Mom, look out!" I remembered shouting, but it was too late. The junky car had crashed right into us, and we had both gone unconscious. "Kate, are you there?" I wheeled around, and could just make out that it was Jackson. "Yeah, I'm here." He sat down next to me. "It's pitch black out. What are you doing here?" "Thinking," I answered simply. I couldn't tell him-- not now. "About what?" I sighed. "The car accident." He nodded. He had heard of how it had happened, but I had never told him of my feelings-- my constant struggling to push it aside. "You want to talk about it?" he asked softly. I stared off at the open expanse where the river was. I had never been one to admit my feelings so openly, but Jackson was my best friend, and I could trust him. I turned to him slowly. "We were on our way home," I began slowly. "We had just finished shopping for Dad's birthday. It was right at the light when something caught my eye. I turned quickly, and saw a big, junky old truck heading straight for Mom's side of the car. I screamed, and told her to look out." I stopped, tears forming at the corners of my eyes. "She turned to see what it was, and then-- then he hit us, and we went unconscious. Next thing I knew we were in the hospital. "It shouldn't of happened," I said, shaking my head. "I was fine. Why? Why wasn't I hurt-- broken something? Everyone says it's a miracle I had no big cuts or breaks. Why me? Why was I fine, and my mother--?" I broke out in sobs as Jackson pulled me close. I laid my head on his shoulder, and cried until I could cry no more. "Thank you," I whispered, "for being my friend, Jack. I appreciate you for always understanding me." Then I stood up, and started for the back door, but I turned quickly. "See you tomorrow?" And even in the darkness I saw his soft smile. "Always," he answered. © 2011 Kelly M.Author's Note
