Dying in His Sleep

Dying in His Sleep

A Story by Karl Klemm
"

A guy dies in his sleep. Pretty self-explanatory.

"
He drove on into the scorching desert, not knowing where he was, nor caring where he was going. Just trying to escape, to get as far away as possible. As he pressed down further on the gas pedal, a sinking feeling entered his chest. Just then, the engine stopped rumbling and the car began to slow down. He let the car coast as far as its inertia would take it. When he stepped out, that sinking feeling overtook him and sent an over-encumbering shiver throughout his body. He stumbled to the front of the car and tried to open the hood, but it wouldn't budge. He pulled up until he thought his fingers would rip off, of no avail. He caught something out of the corner of his eye and looked at the ground to see a small drop of blood trickling down the road. His eyes followed the thin, red trail until they came upon something much more unsettling.
Before him stood several tall, brooding figures. They were like silhouettes, completely featureless, save for the two glowing, white lights he assumed were eyes. The eyes of the figure closest to him became increasingly bright as a horrifying shriek echoed throughout the landscape. It was unlike any sound he had ever heard. As the shriek subsided, the unsettling feeling grew once more, this time so powerful that he fell to his knees in shock. He looked out into the distance and saw that there were more shadowy figures coming towards him. The ones closest to him began moving as well. He tried to stand, but fell. His legs were not working normally. It was as if he had lost all muscle memory, and now had to operate each muscle individually.
Concentrating entirely on escape, he managed to rise to his feet and turn around. Every step was now a complicated process, and he trudged away as quickly as he could, the silhouettes lumbering behind him, the trickle of blood now a steadily flowing stream. He did not dare to look behind him, for fear that the figure's glare would paralyze him completely.
After what felt like days of walking, his curiosity and exhaustion had peaked, and he stopped to look around. There was no road, no desert, and no silhouettes. Red covered the entire landscape. It was up to his knees. Just as he exhaled in relief, he heard that ungodly shriek in the distance. The sea of blood rose dramatically and control over his body dwindled. He lost his balance and fell into the blood as any and all ability to move ceased. Escape was no longer a possibility. All he could do now was drift and watch the silhouettes inch closer.
