April Fool

April Fool

A Poem by The Devil's Own B***h

“So, how you doing?”
You called me up and asked.
Your voice took me back
To how things were in the past.
My heart began to flutter
With the rise of butterflies;
Thinking back to how
I used to stare into those blue eyes.
You said that you wanted me back
Because you had missed me so,
You apologized for being stupid,
“I should never have let you go”.
A smile crossed my lips
As I listened to your words.
I even begin to hear
The previously unnoticed singing of the birds!
Oh, I knew the day would come
When you’d come back to me!
I knew it would happen,
I just had to wait and see.
Then suddenly my thoughts
Were rudely interrupted
When on the other line
With laughter you erupted.
“April Fool!” you shouted
With unbelievable glee.
“April fool?” I repeated.
“You mean you don’t want me?”
Your laughter turned cruel
At the naivety of my question.
It then changed to disgust
As you contemplated the suggestion.
“When I said I loved you,
You couldn’t have thought it was true!
No one could ever love
Someone with likes of you.”
To say that my heart had broken
Would be the understatement of the year.
I just kept trying to tell myself
That what you had said, I didn’t hear.
But the realization came at such a speed
That on my breath I began to choke.
I was nothing more than
A stupid April Fools joke!
