Every DayA Poem by Olive BelikovEvery day I come home Get off the bus Go up the front stairs And stop. I stare at the door, Contemplating what lies on the other side. Mom's at work, always at work; So no help there. Dads inside, Probably watching t.v. Sink will be full With his dirty dishes. Laundry will be waiting From when I started it this morning. Counter full of food He never put away. Cats need fed. House needs cleaned. Dinner needs made. I also know That as soon as I walk in, He'll have a reason already made To yell at me. "Go clean your room, stop being a slob!" "You forgot your homework, why the hell are you so irresponsible?" "You do nothing around this house. You live here, do some work!" But the thing is, I don't live here. I work here. Sure, I have a room. Clothes in a drawer. But it doesn't feel like a home. So I stand here Outside the door, Knowing I can't wait forever. I take one deep breathe Reach out And open my life.
