The Family.

The Family.

A Poem by Thomas Fitzgerald
"

A irreverent stab at a nation of fools!

"
It starts with a seed, white and pure,
Soiled and brown by soil itself alone,
A sprinkle of nature our life giver water,
Careful now for it might just hit a stone.

Resembling a weed at first peek,
Squinting petals as it sees dawn's light,
Pushing up to heaven at a trains pace,
Yet getting no-where in this lonely fight.

At last my first goal is achieved,
My arms as green as grass, are free,
But wait, there are others here to see,
A lot bigger but yet the same as me.

Years have passed, I'm now strong and tall,
My trunk is full and sturdy in stature,
My leaves come and go in all colours,
All that is wrong is my tiny root fracture.

Oh God help us all we hear the rumbling,
See those orange caps coming closer by me,
A roaring engine and spinning blades,
Years old bark now stripped it has to be.

Alas my beauty and power wasn't enough,
The family has all been chopped down,
At least the paper we make may be useful,
Not even that can turn this horrid frown.

Nicely told! I connected with this, with the trees. I felt the images of orange capped loggers come to kill. There is deeper meaning here as well, not spoken. The implications of death to support... ? legal briefs? paperbacks? computer paper for children to print out their Paint scribbles?

Nice and different. I enjoyed reading it.

I say recycling is a good way along with the proper management of forest trees where she should plant more to beautify our world for this earth we have to share it with animals and trees and be a good neighbor to them too...An excellent write...:)

it seems we excel at destroying what is beautiful in this world, without replacing what we tear down. what a lovely race we are. excellent write, dear Thomas, nicely done!

It made me sad. You made me feel as the tree. Are we not hypocrites, then, as authors who love to see our work in print? I think so, but thus is the way of life. If not for us to cut the tree, alas, someone else would. At least you honored the sacred tree in your writing.

I especially enjoyed the first 2 stanzas. An unusually interesting accont of plant life! I wonder if trees indeed do have a sense of family, I can imagine some intelligent attachment to place and context in their sense of immobility.

Nothing as wonderful as a forest with trees that can be seem forever. I live in Michigan. After you leave the cities. The trees and animals still have some control. I feel bad when a tree is cut down. The tree had life and great purpose. The air we breath is important. I feel there is more meaning in this poem. Sometime we miss things when they are gone. A excellent poem.
