The Angel

The Angel

A Poem by Thomas Fitzgerald
"

For Pope John Paul II

"

This man alone at Heaven's gate,
Peter said, "We're expecting you, sir",
But this man stood still and did not stir.

"What in heaven's the matter?" did old Peter ask,
"Can you not permit to do this task?"
"I will not walk that threshold there,
I'm not finished, this cannot be fair."

"Come now fellow, 'tis time to rest,
You've passed our Lord's most ghastly test."
"What test is that? I ask you, Saint,
Speak slowly now, for I might faint."

"He alone will tell you that,
Step up here now to this mat.
Wipe thy feet and clear thy mind,
For God is waiting and He is kind."

"I beg you Peter, can you say what's not?"
"Yes I can, now here's your lot:
'Tis neither the Berlin Wall nor communism,
For those are questions which are not in Him."

"It can't be laws or roads to yield,
Or when you danced in those fields,
Those question's won't be all that late,
Now flow on through this, His gate."

"Yes, yes sir, now hold your orders",
"I'll follow those white lily borders.
Farewell, all my family and kin,
For I must sit now away from sin."

I decided to peruse your back pages since you have been so kind in accommodating my recent read requests. I plucked this one out, right off, and love it. It is full of mystery, and reverence, with a kindness and an understanding of the humanity of a difficult subject to tackle. This is a great piece.

Thomas Fitzgerald,
To think of the root of importance for man: To live with no sin. Our lives are so clouded by sin's evil influence but in Christ someday our sin blotted out and true life will reign. It is beyond my comprehension. "The Angel" was a refreshing reminder of the fact that I am not of this world.........My position is in Christ for he has paid my ransom. Blessings ...............Kathy

Thank you.
It's incredible how the narration sets the scene and then keeps one there. Mysterious and humble - confusion and coming to terms with the inevitable. Great work.
Congrats!

Thank you I was so delighted when I won thank you for the review
Who`s John Paul? Huh? I think, you should replace the word with "John Smith" *Kidding*

Well, this poem`s itself a pleasurable piece of art. You`ve written it very well holding the shades of insights to your pen. Liked it. Nice imagery.

To abstract and abstraction seems a bit redundant but you have aged it well within these hallowed casks of myth and tradition. When sipped slowly it warms and sets the mind for further contemplations. Perhaps there is a subtle humor here but should I have missed it I do not care for here upon my mind is rent these words of thou and thine and it.
