Mammy

Mammy

A Poem by Thomas Fitzgerald
"

A thought for my own Mother, now passed, disease and cancer never fails to punch us in the stomach.

"
It is said often and without losing feeling,
that Mothers make no excuse about leaving,

Where minds are as one in siblings hearts,
take solace in those that care but time departs,

Sickness is forever and enemy of bonds held near,
and there is the siren to take our thoughts unclear,

Breaking of bones would be easy if not for her,
as we say over and over one more moment per,

A fellow waits in slumber to seek the living wife,
may she rest is bellowed from bells in pure strife,

Take notice of smiles as they will not shine for long,
ah Mammy where are those quips now almost song,

Brave is the child who holds all in thier lap,
never showing the hurt as he lays for a nap,

Glass houses are all around and stones have been picked,
No shield anymore so toughen and take the licked,

Goodbye gentle soul may you come back and be fine,
doubt it though as the box hurries forward made in pine.

Dear Thomas. Powerful and honest words shared.
"Glass houses are all around and stones have been picked,
No shield anymore so toughen and take the licked,"
The above lines were my favorite. Had the feel of the old man logic. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

No shield anymore when you lose your mammy. Your love shines through this beautiful tribute. Those bonds are not broken by death, maybe they are strengthened for the more because of our loss. A wrench indeed dealing with the grief of one so treasured.

The love you had for your mother and the pain of losing her are powerful throughout this write. Once a mother is gone, nothing seems the same. Beautifully written. Lydi**

Love covers any distance and deathly disease cannot hold it back - -Thomas your words to your Mammy ring with understanding and hope that she now smiles after coping with pain in her passing. A powerful read which gives us all need for facing reality.

"Brave is the child who holds all in thier (their) lap" I don't know my friend, as I was reading this... and when I reached this sentence, I was thinking too of the brave mothers who lost their children, though mothers are able to deal with it more than the pure little child specially when they are being abused about it, yes can You believe it? someone being abused because of THIS?
"Glass houses are all around and stones have been picked,
No shield anymore so toughen and take the licke"

will they ever understand, sickness and death know no poor or wealth? no religion or race? no gender? we are all the same here. I'm sorry of Your loss my friend, I'm sure Your Mammy is so proud as she reads these wise and loving words from You, the last two lines were touchingly perfect.

Profoundly sad.
Perhaps our most significant loss in this life.
Well said, Thomas; well said!

Thomas,

Great work! I really like the imagery, metaphors, and thought processes in this. I like to think of the couplets describing quick, sporadic, and painful memories of the mother. Again, great read.

I lost my closest friends just two years back, she died of cancer when she was only 14. I couldn't see her when that happened, it stayed as a regret. However she left a note a months before she died "I'm always around." Maybe she knew she won't live but her courage was adorable, even at the age of 14 she wasn't afraid of death, but left for us hope. For your mom, I'm sure she'd wish you be happy even when she'd not physically there. However she'd always bless you, watch you, she'd be happy to be remembered. Some distances can't be covered but hearts are never distant. You believe it or not she's always around. For the poem, you immortalized your mom here with this beautiful verse. Intense feelings are destructive and productive... you decided it to make it productive, for you and bit for us.

Be well .
I was 9 when she passed. Throat cancer was the fiend that robbed us of her. Was too young to process the loss. Brought up by my dad. He didn’t marry again yet he wasn’t very affectionate. I do understand how you feel though. It’s a very tough loss to bear.
