St. Valentine.

St. Valentine.

A Poem by Thomas Fitzgerald
"

A different take one might say!

"

With Claudias reigning full no hope gathered,

A powerful force now of course not then,

An edict of soldiers not to marry in sin,

For fighting be better with fists not pen.

Marriage in secret in accordance with faith,

Secrets rumbled like guts to the robes,

Now caught we suffer in line with the whip,

Gather centrally at the prisons abodes.

From your Valentine I wrote to soothe the girl,

A miracle performed with Asterius's permission,

Yet a judgement handed down in haste dear fellows,

To be beaten, stoned, decapitated no omission.

A martyr now we invoke in violets blue,

Red roses remind of the lash not of heart,

Cuddle indeed with that special other half,

Beware I warn thee for I'll slice with the dart!

A tribute to the myth of Christian saints as indeed Valentine was incarcerated for marrying soldiers and Asterius was his jailer, whose daughter's sight he restored, and then wrote to her (Valentines messages). You seek out history and myth and write it in intriguing verses Thomas.

Thank you Tate, I do love when you review.
Phenomenal! I absolutely adore your masterful and eloquent use of vocabulary and the historical context, reminding us the true significance of St. Valentine. For me, it was a lesson learned and an inspiration to show my better half how much I love her, with my deeds not a bouquet of roses. Beautiful work Thomas!

I agree with Coyote, this makes one want to brush up on their history. Soldiers not to marry in sin...that is one I have never heard before. May I ask are you spending Valentine's Day alone? Valentine.

Thank you for stopping by, always a pleasure.
Certainly not the typical Valentine's Day write, is it? Yes, St. Valentine was a martyr....the holiday truly does not make sense if you delve into the background, does it? Unique write. Lydi**

My dear friend. A powerful poem. I had to read many times to enjoy the words.

You give me taste of history and something to think about in your words. You took me to many places and led to the strong ending. You left me the want to research and know more. Thank you for sharing the excellent poetry.
