My Sparta!

My Sparta!

A Poem by Thomas Fitzgerald
"

A look at a place and people I've fallen in love with.

"

Mothers of men roam free among the grasses,

Strike chords within the hearth of male kin,

Attica asks why they rule over strong men,

Bear witness to those that never use sin.

Greeks scratch at stone in our honour,

Speak of glory and freedom from corruption,

Pedantry has not now or ever been food,

Strong will and power slack needless abruption.

Helen and Gorgo refuse to take the bait,

Leonidas shake hands with enemies nah one,

Cynisca has power that rival the future beauty,

Menelaus our king and god how graves are gone.

Sparta the heaven for all warriors and slaves,

A true force of nature and tattered dreams,

Carvings tell of all those pleasant and bloody wars,

How history forgets the telling and secret schemes.

I missed your poems, sir, with the author's note saying "honesty" ! xD
So, let me be honest, since you asked it:
the first thing that catch my attention is your great knowledge, you've put so many important people's name in the poem ! (I honestly remember only Helen and Menelaus, I've always hated greek mythology xD). Your metrica is outstanding, it is so perfect that I can SEE it, no need to count syllables. Use of quatrains, a classical :). Great pathos, looks pretty much a praise !

A place and a time speak of events that are endearing and everlasting...where we can put new clothes on them and recover the essence of the principle, then and maybe then we discover immortality.

Love the woven mythology...
Your poetry has held something since I first read you...I believe it is called heart :) The chance to adorn all with a feather of multi colours....judgement has seen too much war...and at the end of it all? A chance to purge the love that shall reside within our hearts, making us a better person in the game called life, balanced percepiton, exceptional poem xoxo

I'm a huge fan of greek mythology and I absolutely loved this piece. It flowed nicely and I even liked the rhyming (I'm not usually a fan ;) )

Great story in this poem. I love pieces on history, battles and mythology. I can be a bit of a geek at times so this one calls to my intelligent side lol

Thank you x
The seemingly entertaining romance you have with words is astounding. I can sit here and read and then read again just to devour every angle your poem throws at me. I guess I can read it one way and then read again and come up with a different feel, but either way you writing propels me to write better and perhaps emulate your way of writing.
