TRAVESTY OF LIFE

TRAVESTY OF LIFE

A Poem by Bill Grimke-Drayton

Protracted elements

of darkening day

consume frailty

in a small,

static form of body,

unrecognizable

someone for me or you,

light devours us

in hospital cleanliness,

we wait

in choked limbo of silence

for final sleep to come,

never

makes its way to the exit,

to give our grief

sometime a certain ending..

This a travesty of life,

hoping for dying

to still the injustice of pain,

we are witness

to ironic cruelty,

waging incessant war

against stricken hope.

Nurses

calm and gentle

belie

inward turbulent storms

we are party to

in novice ignorance,

drained

of shameful tears.

Your poem touches me as it reminds me of my mother who died of pancreatic cancer. She was the most positive person I have ever known and yet, at the end, she too was waiting for this travesty of life to finally end. With dignity. And great remembrance of all the good moments.

Well done.
