No one said that life was fairA Poem by Kieran James McGovernsong i wrote/recorded last nightNecessities you can’t afford Here’s one more bad habit to support Sleeping on Grand Central stairs No one said that life was fair Malik, 14, lives in Sudan He is starving, orphaned, shattered sad Never has the time to cry Besides, his tear ducts have gone dry No reason “why” Neighbor’s daughter had her Sweet Sixteen In the ICU, leukemia, she dreams of Red carpets, love, often she weeps For all she might never get to see And yet you say “everything happens for a reason” It seems naïve and so cliché Belief destiny and all that’s “meant to be” breeds apathy Don’t bother to tie your shoes today Stock market dropped and now you’re fucked Low on hope and out of luck Press the barrel to your head But you chose empathy instead With time and only pain to spare Board the bus and pay the fare No one said that life was fair No one said that life was fair © 2010 Kieran James McGovern |
