Natio et Religo

Natio et Religo

A Poem by Kieran James McGovern
"

1/4 stanzas of new rap

"

Natio et Religio

A million demons

Created equal

Living within the cerebrum

Seething at peace beneath the steeple

Speaking of evil

I see extortion running rampant

Colonial exploitation, military expansion

And occupation of lands in

Which missionaries, armed with scriptures and dictionaries

Once had come to rape and take

The nascent foundation of a nation

Whose leaders would rise to do the same in time

Just differently

Just a bit less civilly

‘Cause tranquility

Perished long before the First Testament

Was published

As a poorly-translated soliloquy

And then what was left

Was spiritual death and excrement

Bodies of Pagan children rotting in piles

Still a bit enticing to the pedophiles

The teachings of Jesus

Have been destroyed by religion

The Biblical contradictions

Inherent in sloppily exhumed, extinct diction

Churches Catholic and Christian

Tragically different

Than their facade of benevolent intention

Overcast by insipid

Shadows of grief abound

I once was lost, but now I’m found

And but for the grace of God go I

Reaching beyond the mundane, and transcending a lie
