Only in Terabitha

Only in Terabitha

A Poem by Kieran James McGovern

Let’s meet at the creek

And let’s leave our answers behind

To engage fully

In the wilderness of wonderment

Portraits of purity

Painted in our footprints

Along the muddy bank

On our way to exuberance and riches

By happenstance absence of worldly knowledge

As much as will soon be forgotten

By the binders of modern myths

Who shun their dreams in pursuit of thrift

Here, there is always a right or wrong way

But, darling, you’re a dreamer

And you don’t care what they say

Let’s get out of here

And escape the maze

To wander way off the trail

That the sinister and sullen have blazed

To relinquish the pompous and pretentious pretexts

Let’s just ditch those dicks…

We’re only dreaming here

But dreams are all we need

We’ll just climb the trees

And hide behind the leaves

When the mundane gang tries to supersede

We can be honest as we want to be

Honesty needs no harnesses here, you see

Heresy to silence the child inside

It’s either you and I against the world

Or me against a lie

“If being alone is a crime, we hang side by side”

From the boughs of the willows

And the low-hanging vines

We could be fugitives, and we could take everything

But only in Terabithia…
