to the bittter, old cynic

to the bittter, old cynic

A Poem by Kieran James McGovern
"

from that loser billy joel's "angry young man'

"

I learned a lesson in reverse

Once in cynicism, so well-versed

A thousand causes in which to believe

I saw them all as so naïve

Who’d have thought the cold would thaw my shell?

As I etched my name on the walls of hell

Then I woke into my dreams

See, nothing’s ever as it might seem

So then I learned to never assume

Expectations spell the very name of doom

Everyone hurts, but it’s seldom we love

Yet if we built misery, we can rise above

When the bottom collapses and the top starts to quake

Will you still have a million negative things to say?

Don’t preach to me, child, I’ve been around the block

Many have risen, I’ve witnessed, who could never connect the dots

Now you’re on the front lines

And we’re ready to go

Fight for grace of human nature

But you’re telling me “NO”

So when time runs up and the clock runs out

And you wonder what life was all about

Will you give your best answers?

Deliver the truth?

Or will you have clichés to spew?

thanks... not a poet, that's why you might be confused... i think poetry is extremely lame :)

This is interesting. It's so interesting that.. I kinda don't get it. The first stanza was brilliant until the etched in hell thing. Past that, the first stanza was very vague and too abstract for my tastes. The "Who would've thought..." line was a great way of getting your point across. I never would've thought of expressing it that way myself, but it works. In the second stanza, I was confused because it says, "Don't preach to me, child.." but I thought this was TO a bitter cynic. And that's why I didn't get it. The last two lines are excellent, though.
