love is a jokeA Poem by Kieran James McGovernska song, say the lines aloudWent out on the weekend for a beer at a bar I only wanted one or two, I don’t need anymore The smoky haze that snuck inside, it settles all around The jukebox plays “Sweet Child of Mine”, will someone turn it down? I like to talk to everyone, I like to just relax But I can’t help but realize how foolish some dudes act When they’re hitting on the bartenders and hitting on the girls Sometimes they come in groups to split into their own worlds Don’t go and think you’re special Don’t come and flaunt your love That institution or illusion that I try to live above I’ve been lied to and cried to and left just the same I smashed in Cupid’s skull and I pissed on his brains Kid, it wasn’t your heart, but your confusion that broke Love is nothing, love is a joke My heart’s half on my sleeve, but it’s frozen and it’s numb I intend never again to rent it out to anyone Listen as I whisper age-old love songs in your ear But that’s corny an pretentious and all too insincere A lot I’ve seen, a lot I’ve done, I’ve been around the block I’ve seen that all you need is vasaline and a sock ‘Cause love, my friend, is dead In fact, it never lived Conversation missing, doesn’t matter anyhow Attraction’s based dancing and the music’s really loud In all of life’s arenas are haves and have-nots Including that which requires a little independent thought If all of this sounds bitter, I’ve one last thing to say Altruism and compassion are simply not the same There is love for others, brothers, fathers, mothers, sisters, friends But not that arrogant, exclusive kind, and so I’ll say again: Love is nothing, love is a joke Love means as much as the strobe lights and the smoke Love is a joke, love is so fake It’s Hollywood’s worst creation to date © 2010 Kieran James McGovern |
