A Poem by Kieran James McGovern

In truth

I’ve no advice to give

There’s a million ways to live

I’ll say “stay positive”

Faith

If that sounds too cliché

Well, I suppose you know my name

And you’d probably guess my trade

The harder they’re pursued

The faster answers will elude

Keep on

American Dream disproved

Means

I don’t know where they are

Sure it’s more than working hard

When scumbags get so far

Lucky

They say ‘x’ marks the spot

Find a smile in every pot

And a nice, six-figure job

And should I come up short

Will you say I’m a good sport?

I’ll try

To find a way to get by

Ready, get set, go

But soon I will be so

Subdued

American Dream disproved

The rat race that will ensue

Means

Again will I once see

Through clouds of disparity

In this land of opportunity?

And should I come up short

Will you say I’m a good sport?

I’ll try

To find a way to get by
