Untitled PoliticalA Poem by Kieran James McGovernSlightly arrogant 2006
So many lives over before they even started Millions of children being born broken-hearted You reconcile it all By putting money in the jar Then you peel away in your 90-thousand dollar car You pay your taxes, mow your lawn, vote on Election Day But in this time and place, altruism only goes a short way ‘Cause as your struggling in vain to attain the American dream You know nothing about the sinister truth behind the scenes And your messiah won’t be seen at the bottom of empty clay bowls No angel hovering above the child, dead at five years old He didn’t receive your donations from last Sunday’s mass Where could it have gone, the new altar? Stained glass Nationality and culture denote the worth human life Business ethics do not exist, superfluity breeds strife Have you ever slept on concrete? Have you ever felt life’s burn? Maybe then you’d understand God-forbid you ever learn You do your job, obey the law, no more, no less Leave decisions up to those in charge because they know what’s best And you starve in your own way, excess is not enough This is the lap of luxury, the cancer of moving up ‘Cause you sell yourself to arm against the poorest of the earth Your pockets grow, your spirit goes, the appraisal of your worth You tuck your children in at night, you’ve arranged for their success And so the story perpetuates from a generation to the next The monetary harvest of humans, when it’s too late, you’ll see No more impoverished to exploit, how is the currency? © 2009 Kieran James McGovern |
