Sleepless

Sleepless

A Poem by Kieran James McGovern

I can’t understand

Maybe it’s a visit from pan

Or the spiteful side of the sandman

Once again

Sleep is not within my reach

It’s not coming naturally

It has to be

Current circumstances

I’m certain I can’t stand it

Now it’s finally made me sick

I think it’s an incubus

That always needs a fix

And I’d hate to have to drink

For beat wits to sink

Down beneath the clouds

Upon which my tired head rests

Under the hill’s crest where itleft

My body brimming with energy

They won’t connect

So how am I gonna sleep?

It’s the hardest part of the week

Long after the sheep

I’ve been counting have fallen asleep

With fatigue

I find my mind inching toward dream

That fuzzy, buzzy sensation that seems
By lucid conviction to be ripped at the seams
