State of the Onion

We were granted our place by the grace of God

We can read and write and kill each other off

And decimate our habitats and fall in love

Enslave ourselves with mandates from “up above”

The effects of human arrogance

Are all-encompassing, ubiquitous

But go ahead and feed your Hummer more gas

Think not about the future, stay cemented in the past

Malik, 14, lives in Sudan

He’s filthy and he’s naked, he assumes the role of dad

To his siblings because their mother died of AIDS

While in the West, religious figures lead anti-gay crusades

He’s 35 pounds and his tear ducts dry

But he doesn’t care, he’s got no time to cry

Near his end, he’ll be dead in the blink of an eye

But then again, so will you and so will I

I may seem like a misanthropic hypocrite

But optimists are as myopic as pessimists

You can vegetate, ferment as the walls collapse

And the ceiling crashes down, but I think perhaps

If we enlighten ourselves and strive, we can turn the tide

It’s never too late until the day you die

With life so short, seemingly meaningless

Don’t you feel a need to make some difference?

People sure are mean, stupid, jerks, and just plane not caring about the world around them. I like how you incorporated the story of the man. Nicely done!
