Swimming '03

Swimming '03

A Poem by Kieran James McGovern

Wading the cold, still water

And everyday it gets a little harder

Everyone is playing Marco Polo

But not me, I’m clinging fast to the ladder, going solo

I don’t know what the trouble is

I always used to swim so well

But now I can’t tell

Won’t you throw me a line?

You float no better when you’re full of liquid

Even still, I’ve got some swimmies in my fridge

Some wrinkly, old dude is splashing girls my age on the side

So I go to the beach, but I kind of fear the riptide

Fat, old sunbathing ladies, hairy guys with no shirts on

Maybe my confidence is all I need to work on

Dried off in the sun, but here I come again

And I think I’m ready to venture the into deep end

Once I make it past the surf

I know I’ll feel like the luckiest man on earth

I don’t need you to be my lifeguard

There’s plenty fish in the sea

There’s plenty fish in the sea
Plenty
