“Why didn’t you say anything?” Kelly questioned, as she moved away from me. I had a feeling I was going to be in the center of all this. I looked around, not knowing what to tell her.
“She’s new and she needed help,” I finally managed to blurt out after an ever long silence.
“I get she’s new, but you stood here and let her talk to me like that,” she replied. Another moment of silence.
“Listen, it’s nothing to get worked up over.”
“Nothing to get worked up over? She stood here and told you to your face to make sure I don’t dumb you down.”
I rubbed the back of my neck and looked at her. She rolled her eyes and stormed off.
“Kelly! Wait!” I shouted, walking after her. I grabbed her arm and pulled her to me. “Listen, don’t be mad at me,” I started, “you know how I feel about you.” The look of anger didn’t leave her face. I moved my face to where hers was and smiled. “C’mon, she’s new, forget about it.”
She eventually smiled and moved her arms around me. I guess I didn’t want her to be mad at me, but that day when she put her arms around my neck, I knew I didn’t have anything special for her.
“Aaay!” Shane called out for me as I made my way through the gates of the school, basketball in hand. I managed to clean up nice that day. Dark washed jeans, a gray tee with graffiti on it, and some nike dunks. I walked over to the basketball team, hand shook them all, and made my way to my usual spot with the guys. Everyone was screaming and raving about the beating we were going to give the other team to secure our spot at the playoffs. “We’re gonna smash them into the ground, man, don’t even sweat it,” I said, pulling my shades up. I moved my eyes to Shane who was welcoming all the girls who usually crowded around us or tried to hook up. Sometimes it got really ugly. Shane moved his arm around a brunette whose name I never remembered. Michael had another girl leaning against his locker, Brett was groping his girl, and some of the other guys were sucking face with random girls. I kept looking around and eventually saw Kelly making her way through the crowd, moving towards me. She smiled and reached out for a hug. I gave her a weak hug and looked around. I saw more girls, more friends of the guy’s, forming around us. From the corner of my eye, I saw JC with Robbie, walking down the hall. She laughed with her friend; her smile was something that made my mind go into a whirlwind. My eyes were hooked until Kelly blocked the view and began babbling on about the spring fling dance and the party Shane was throwing 2 weeks before it.
“Tyler?” she asked. “Helloo?” My gaze was broken and I nodded.
“Yeah, yeah, okay, whatever,” I said, continuing to nod. I shook my head to clear my head and looked at Kelly, who had her arms crossed, trying to figure out what I was looking at. She moved closer and kissed my cheek. I backed away, it was turning me off. Everything was just bugging me. I was saved by the bell, as the crowd around us vanished into thin air.
“Cmon man, we gotta get to Edward’s class, you know how she gets,” Shane said as he nudged me. I stood there, still mesmerized, thinking about the girl who walked by.
“DUDE,” Shane said louder, “what’s going on?”
“Naww..it’s nothing,” I said, sighing.
“It must be something, you haven’t been yourself lately. What’s up?” he asked.
“Forget it, you’ll just laugh or make some s**t joke about it,” I said, pulling my backpack up onto my shoulder.
“You serious? We’ve been buds since grade school man, you can tell me whatever,” he said.
“Fine,” I started,” it’s JC, every time she walks by , or every timeI see her, I just can’t think of anything else.”
“JC?”
“Yeah..Jordyn.” He looked at me blankly. “The new girl,” I restated.
“Ohhh,” he said. “Damn. I don’t know what to say. Do you even know anything about the girl?”
“I know she’s chill enough to say more than two words to me even though she should hate me.”
Shane didn’t say anything, just looked around as if he’d find words on the wall to say back to me.
“I don’t know man, I mean you got Kelly. She’s hot as hell, and you two are finally working on it,” he finally said after the long silence. I shot Shane a look of irritation through my shades and shook my head.
“Yeah, sure, she’s hot, but she’s always on my nuts and she gets clingy after a while. She acts like we’re a couple but we arent.”
“I see, I see. Well good luck with that,” he said bleakly. “We gotta get to Edward’s.”
I nodded and we both headed towards the class everyone fell asleep in . But I had a reason to keep me awake and she sat down right next to me.
I rushed into Mrs. Edward’s class and slid into my desk, pulling my shades off. I looked around the room, and saw some of the players from the team chatting, Kelly talking to her friends, and occasionally looking at me. When I turned my head, my mind went blank and filled with thoughts at the same time. Jordyn walked into class, moving her hair out of her face, clutching her books. I seriously couldn’t figure out why I was so attracted to her. She looked different today. Her dress hugged her body, as she moved through the aisle, while her curled hair bounced and flew around lightly. She moved to her seat, looked at me, smiled, and sat down. I smiled back and pulled off my shades. She put down her books and started skimming through them. She was concentrated, but so was I; to make conversation, to try and talk to the girl.
“Is there a party today that I didn’t get invited to?” I asked her, jokingly.
She looked up, looked down at her summer dress, and laughed, “A girl can’t look decent on a week day anymore?”
I grinned, “You definitely look more than decent.”
She stopped reading, looked back at me and smiled. “Why thank you, you don’t look too bad yourself,” she said with a laugh. I looked at her up and down, damn, she’s gorgeous. Edwards walked in and ruined the conversation of course, and told us to pull out our worksheets and work.
“Mrs. Edwards, can we work in partners?” a voice asked. I turned my head to see the girl sitting next to Kelly, with her hand up.
“Sure, just get your work done,” Edwards said back. Kelly turned back to look at me, and gave me a “Work with me?” kind of smile. I looked away, as if I didn’t see her and looked back at Jordyn, who was already working on her worksheet, flipping pages, and pushing hair behind her ears. Kelly asked me to come to her table. I didn’t want to get into with her, so I made my way to her table but chatted with the guys instead. I worked on my worksheet a little bit, chatting here, looking there.
“She’s hot, aaah damn,” I heard after snapping out of it. I tuned back into the conversation with the guys.
“Whose hot?” I asked.
“That girl over there,” Jason said, pointing. I turned my head to the direction of his hand, to see him pointing at Jordyn. I laughed and patted Jason on the shoulder.
“Nice choice, she is,” I said. The guys burst out in laughter.
“I bet she has a boyfriend though,” one of the guys said.
“Nah, she’s new, maybe she doesn’t.”
“She’d wanna be my girlfriend,” Jake said, pointing below his stomach and winking. The guys howled with laughter and the conversation eventually lead to hot girls and who was taking who to the party.
Jason pointed his head to JC and smiled. I knew his plan. We both walked over to her and pulled up chairs. She looked up as we sat down, confused.
“Waddupp, JC?” I asked, smiling, and leaning back in my chair.
“Did I do something..?” she asked, confused.
“Naah,” I said laughing, “My buddy over here thinks you should know who he is.”
Jason hit my shoulder and laughed, pulling out his hand. “Hey, I’m Jason,” he said.
JC shook his hand and smiled, still confused, “Hi, I’m Jordyn, but call me JC, please.”
“This isn’t some trick, is it?” she asked, looking down at her work, and then back up.
“Why would it be a trick?” I asked. She looked at me with her hand on her hip.
”Ohh that’s right, what happened with Shane. No, it’s not a trick, trust me,” I said. She smiled a smile of relief and looked at the both of us.
“So why does your friend think I need to know him?” she asked.
I looked back at the guys, Jason pointing to his belt, cracking up. I laughed and motioned them to cut it out.
“Well your new here,” Jason started off, “I thought it wouldn’t hurt to introduce myself, ya know?”
JC smiled and thanked him. I pulled my chair up next to JC.
“Did you get the answer to this?” I asked, grabbing her paper before she could give an answer. I scanned her paper. She wasn’t only gorgeous, but smart too. Something I hadn’t seen much in any of the girls at our school.
“Damn, we got an Einstein in the house,” I said looking at her. She raised and eyebrow and took her paper back.
“I try, I try,” she said. As I handed her paper back, I saw Kelly staring at me, with Shane next to her. I ignored it and put my stuff in my backpack, as the bell rang. JC rushed to put her things in her bag. As she got up to leave, she dropped something. I walked over to the floor and picked a small book with flowers on it, which had Styrofoam letters made out to spell “lyric book.”
“Jordyn, wait!” I looked around to find no trace of her in sight. “You forgot your..lyric..book,” I said to myself, sighing. I put the book in my backpack and walked out of class. I walked to my locker and put the book inside, closing the door, to see Kelly waiting.
“Hey,” she said.
“Uh, hey.”
“Are we cool?” she asked, looking at the floor. I started feeling guilty. I wanted to tell her we needed to go slower, better yet, not do anything at all, but I couldn’t get it out of me. She took my hand. I squeezed it lightly and looked at her.
“Are we cool? What’s wrong?” she asked.
“It’s nothing. I just..”
“Just what?”
“I don’t know, I have a lot on my mind, I guess,” scratching the back of neck. She looked at me and let my hand go.
“Oh okay, I understand. Shane told me,” she said.
I jerked my head. Oh s**t. “Shane told you what?” I asked, anxiously.
“He told me that you don’t want to move to fast, and that sometimes I get a little..clingy,” she said.
“Yeah..” I trailed off.
“Well I guess we can move slower,” she said, moving closer.
“I wanted to tell you myself--” I was cut off by her lips, as she pushed them against mine. I wanted to pull away and tell her to take it slow, but it didn’t feel too bad, so I kissed her like I’d never see her again. She opened her eyes and bit her lip, moving my hands down her back. I pulled them away and looked at her.
“No, Kelly. We can’t.”
“I really like you. I want you to be my boyfriend.”
“Well I’m not sure about that..” I trailed off, sighing. “I gotta go, we’ll talk about this later I guess.” I pulled my backpack onto my shoulder and walked off, as fast as I could. This situation was starting to get on my nerves. I liked Kelly, I really did. She had me locked down and we weren’t even a couple. I brushed off the nerves and ran into the locker room for gym. Hopefully the court, some shots and the hoop would get my mind off everything.
