10 years

A Poem by AKhaus

It took 10 years to erode my self esteem.
It took 10 years to completely lose all of me.
I am getting my footing back as I learn to feel free.
I am trying not to attribute such things on other beings.
It took 10 years to reconstruct my thoughts.
I was willing in that destruction and loss.
I'm approaching 2 years that I've left that island of hopeless dreams.
I must remember that expectations can be deadly.

This is great. I love how you describe your freedom as a skill that needs to be exercised, not something that you'd naturally know what to do with after so many years of a negative experience: "I am getting my footing back as I learn to feel free". I also like the metaphor of being trapped on a destructive "island of hopeless dreams" and the image of sailing away cautiously, apprehensive towards what lies ahead.
