"Straw-Berry Ice Cream"
khatoonhazara

I never liked strawberry ice cream
But something came over me

But even that gave away; crumbling like lemon squares
Not the way ice cream is supposed to crumble

I stared at it, disgusted
Depression didn't taste good

I threw it out
Rubbed the dirty, tainted bowl clean of its' memories

Then I looked outside, the birds there, and hungry
I felt heavy

Sadness weighs a ton
It often does

I had a rice bowl besides me
I took it and opened the lid

I pinched a few grains with my fingers and let it soar out to the roof of our garden
At first, no one was the wiser

Then, seconds passed, two birds flew in to eat
Their empty bellies' evident

I sighed
Sadness weighed half a ton

When more and more birds flew in to ate
I threw a handful of rice

Pigeons came too
Sadness weighed 3 bricks

I fed them all
The whole rice bowl finished, I re-filled

Taking them back to the windowsill, I looked outside
They were all finished and turned to me in unison, waiting for another handful of rice
Sadness vaporized in that instant

We feed many wild things here in northern farm country. Watching them eat brings smiles. For me a much bigger smile would have come from eating that ice cream. Valentine
