Bare

Bare

the wind invites me to a tea party.
my feet are free of their usual attire.
the gravel beneath them feels normal, because it is.
we were free of everything, once.
we never knew what war was, once.
we were united, once.
at this tea party that i went to, with just my bare feet and i, we talked; wind and rain.
we argued over the better.
we knew what we were, only we never knew what we could be.
the wind told me she was the better because she helped guide people to their destiny.
the rain whispered she was the better because she brings laughter and joy.
the wind pointed out to the rain that with rain comes thunder and lightning.
the rain covered her face with her hands and began to weep.
the wind went on and on about all the good that she does.
that she's done.
i looked at the wind in disgust and told her she shouldn't boast.
that she shouldn't have been so mean to rain.
they both stormed out of the place we have come to.
we were supposed to have tea and talk about the good in this world.
instead it turned into a competition to see who was the better.
rain and wind fought so hard against one another.
rain comes to me with tears in her eyes and rests her head on my shoulder.
"why can't we get along?"
she sobs.
she lifts her head and says that i am the better of them both.
that i never boasted about anything.
"there's hope yet"
