He entered the store
briskly, opening the door, in a hurry. He only had ten minutes left of his
lunch break and he wanted to get back early to make up for being late yesterday. His stomach growled once again. He needed
something to eat, just to tide him over until his shift ended. He walked up to
the register and looked down at the menu.
"I'll just have one of your homemade
chocolate brownies please," he told the person behind the counter.
"Of course, and can I get your name?"
a sweet, tender voice asked him. Still looking down, surveying the menu for any
last minute choices, he answered back quickly.
"Adam," he said.
There was a brief silence.
"I knew that," the voice replied. Adam
looked up, laughing a little.
"And why is tha-" he stopped.
It was her.
He gazed into her eyes. Blue and white like the
oceans waves.
"No..." his voice faded away. He felt his
heart jump into his throat. Tears begin to form in his eyes. He couldn't drop
his gaze.
"I thought I lost you."
"You can't get rid of me," she
replied. "Never in a million years."
Adam gripped the counter to help himself from
falling to his knees.
"But you-" She pressed a single finger
against his lips.
"I'll never leave you. Always remember
that."
Adam reached his hand out, and touched her face.
So real.
Adam closed his eyes, his hand feeling her soft
skin. He opened his eyes.
She was gone.
His hand stayed, reaching out to nothing.
A single tear slid down his face.
