I Am A Refugee.... And So Are You

A Poem by Reflexion

I Am A Refugee… And So Are You

I am pretty sure I would rather be a refugee

Than a republican

Or even a democrat for that matter

Being forced into a corner requires great effort

To overcome

But on the way you get to play witness

To some truths

And those truths could be learned nowhere else

We have all been placed there

But what is truly rare

Is becoming someone it’s ok to hate

Having a label thrust upon you which could determine your fate

The fate of your nations and their institutions

The fate of the powerful and their meaningless persecutions

The fate of the states always looking over their shoulder

The fate of the son who relies on the soldier

Because the soldier is father and

The father must sacrifice

For the fate of the powerful who never want to pay full price

So in reply the vultures hover above the refugee

A product of fate

Very easy to segregate

From the rest of the population

Keep them in isolation

Don’t allow them to breathe

Make them less than human and show them

On a broadcast for all to see

Never mind the fact that they are part of mankind

A part of ourselves that we have left behind

But it’s so easy to make perception reality

So we are eager to believe in the caricature that is created

The one with the features that have been exaggerated

Exaggeration allows us to fulfill our desires

To acquire a little more

Denying our ancestors who too once slept on a floor

Living their lives in the dust and debris

All so their children could hope to be free

Free from the shadows as they march through their past

Free to be present to chase dreams that last

All of us are refugees, republicans too

But not even republicans have the power to choose

When they will be born or

Who they will be born to

So take pride in the refugee that’s inside of you
