Beautiful MemoriesA Story by Kevin GutierrezMemories are powerful, and can hold so much emotion. Each one holds its own story. I just got out of the car when my DRIOD X vibrated. I took a
peak at my phones screen and on the notification bar at the very top of the
phone, her name appeared, along with the message, “I’m on my way!” I smiled, put my phone back in my pocket, and continued to
walk down the street that ended where the ocean started. To the east of me, sea
food restaurants where humming and buzzing with business. This place was
popular on a Friday night, especially during the summer when the weather stayed
in the mid 70’s throughout the night. I was nearing the end of the sidewalk
when a kid, probably an eighth grader, went running pass me. The sidewalk that I
was walking on had the restaurants on the right side and a huge open grass area
to the left where, currently, a mix of incoming eighth graders and incoming
freshman were playing and hanging around. The way they dressed, and I guess the
way they looked, made you think that they were about to start their junior year
of high school. Kids these days just didn’t look or act their age anymore. I snickered and walked to the handrail that kept you from
falling into ocean. A slight breeze accompanied the calm and steady ocean tide.
The few clouds in the sky were a bright yellow, reflecting the dying sun’s
rays, while the rest of the sky was a very deep orange. I let out a long deep
breath, enjoying the summers evening at shoreline. A hand fell on top of my forearm and I looked right to find
her looking out at the oceans view with me. “Come on,” I said, “Let’s walk.” I grabbed her hand and we
walked around the restaurants and began to climb the hill that hid this small
community of rich houses and stores. I let her walk in front of me and put my
hands around her waist as we began to go up the hill. Her dirty blonde hair flowed
to the right making her light tan neck visible. I pressed my noise on it and
kissed it. She shrugged her shoulders and jolted as I had forgotten how
ticklish she was. She turned around and flashed her beautiful smile at me. The
sun’s light was basically completely gone, with the moon fully present in the
air now, making her brilliant blue eyes glow white with bliss. We were half way up when I spotted two seats hanging off the
side of hill, revealing a blanket of light covering all the houses and the area
that we had just left, which was considered downtown. I tugged on her hand so
that we could go and sit there but I met my tug with a harder tug, pulling me
back to her. I looked at her confused and she said, “Trust me, when we get to
the top, you’ll realize why I don’t want to just stop here.” I trusted her and
with her on my side, continued walking up the hill. Everything was now very dark, the road hard to perceive with
only the moons dim glow guiding us on the right direction. Finally, the road
curled and made us walk a 180 turn and a brick walk, three feet tall at most,
greeted us at the end. I looked up and the sky was so clear it made it seem as
though I was in space, stripped away from all the town lights blocking the
night sky’s view. I turned my attention back to her but she was already leaning
on the brick wall, smiling at me. She waved me over and turned back around. I
came behind her and wrapped my arms around. Now it was clear why she wanted to
come up here and I couldn’t have been happier that I followed her. Over the
wall, the hill dropped off to reveal the shimmering ocean, glowing from the
moon’s gaze. Beyond that, the city came into view and was blurred out from all
the lights that flared off of all the skyscrapers. Of all the beauty that I could
see, the most noticeable feature of it all was just how quite everything was
from up here. I could see from up here where we had started and it was funny
how we couldn’t hear a thing from up here. The only thing I could hear was the
soft breeze that flew through the air. She turned her head and kissed me on the cheek. “I’m glad everything
worked out the way it did,” She said. “I’m glad this is only just the beginning.”
I couldn’t have said it any better. I looked back up into the night sky and
wondered what the stars had in store for us. I could only hope that the future
held happy, beautiful memories like this. © 2015 Kevin Gutierrez |
