A DreamA Story by Kevin GutierrezA perfect night out with a girl in a fantasy world. They are approaching a city in the late night. It was a weird looking boat, no question about it, but
I couldn't be more grateful. The dance floor was on the second floor of the boat
with walls that were made entirely of glass. I wasn't dressed like I had just
come from a wedding but just in some casual plaid shorts and a white polo
shirt. Across from me was her. She was beautiful and I could have just stared
at her for the rest of my life and be satisfied. Her wavy golden blonde hair
was lose and flowed down her back in a way that made her irresistible and
impossible not to look at. She wore a white silk shoulder-less dress as if she
had taken a fashion design straight from the goddesses of Greek mythology
themselves. She wore no jewelry except for a golden bracelet on her right
wrist. Her electric blue eyes looked at me with such intensity that it almost
made it hard to look her back in the eyes. I walked up to her and took her by the hand. Her hand
was warm with life and I felt like I had just grasped the other half of my
soul. There was nothing around us but an empty, gleaming, dance floor and
stairs at the back of the ship so we could climb back up onto the main floor so
we could get off this ship and venture the city we were arriving at. I looked out to the city and was stunned with how beautiful
it looked. Skyscrapers protruded near the middle of the city but surrounding
the skyscrapers were smaller, yet more mesmerizing, buildings. The low, dim,
light that illuminated all of them made it clear that it was late but also let
you know that this city wasn't going to sleep anytime soon. She squeezed my hand lightly and began to walk to the
stairs as the boat arrived at the dock. We walked up the stairs and through all
the hallways on the top floor until we were at the bow of the boat. I rested my
forearms on the rails and looked out at the city. She moved next to me so that our upper arms and
shoulders touched. She was shorter than me but not by much. She gave off the
aroma of a sweet smelling rose that only the best gardener could produce. Her lightly
tanned skinned glowed under the moon which had a powerful gaze in the cloudless
sky. The stars around it were dimmed by how bright the moon was. Before we knew it the boat had stopped and a bridge
had formed between the boat and the dock. We walked over to the pass between
the boat and dock and saw a man standing there. He wore a captain’s uniform
with his cap under his left arm. He looked at us with a weary, but calm, face.
I tilted my head slightly as a way of saying, “Thank you for this”. I took her
hand and walked across to the dock. For the most part it seemed empty with only the moon
as our source of light to guide us. We managed to get to the side walk that
followed the beach around the shoreline of the city. We never said a word to
each other but every so often she would squeeze my hand or I would squeeze hers
as if to make sure this was real. Finally we walked off the side walk onto a huge smoothed
out part of the beach. I took off my shoes and helped her take off her heals.
We found a place to lie down and a gentle warm breeze touched our bodies. I
looked at her and she smiled back. Her smile was something I had never seen
before as it sent a warm fuzzy feeling throughout my whole body. This couldn't
be real I thought. We lied down on the sand and, holding hands, looked up
at the sky in awe as there seemed to be a never ending river of stars that
littered the sky. I wrapped her in my arms and held her close. She rested her head on my shoulders and the calm tide of the water rolling in and out made my eyes heavy and my body yearn for sleep. “If this is a dream,” I thought, “Well . . . it was a good one.” © 2014 Kevin GutierrezAuthor's Note
