waste of rain

waste of rain

A Poem by Kelsey Rogers
"

told from the point of view of someone who had to change to be accepted

"
I thought you wanted rain so
I manifested myself into the conceited,
indulgent person I am today.

I left clues. I gave you treasure
maps within me but you turned around
the moment you saw demons
standing on top of the walls.

I thought you wanted mystery and a chase so
I gave myself all of the essence that I was "different"
When in reality I was as unoriginal
as the sick, deranged thoughts that cross your head.

And then I realize that there's a dark interior
behind the reason that you even gave a damn
about me in the first place.

I thought you wanted someone who was
put together so I stole money for a stupid jacket
that you never even noticed.
I thought you wanted a hurricane but it turns out that you
didn't even want a rainstorm at all

Interesting that this can be read literally or metaphorically, in a sense. It's a kind of balanced mixture, leaning from one to the other intermittently. I know surface appearance shouldn't be elemental in poetry, but I find the arrangement/alignment of the stanzas to be quite effective and somehow makes the poem more interesting and readable.
The title -which is excellent- drew me to this poem, and I think the connection between title and content is particularly effective taken as a whole. This is intelligently put together and there is a gravity in the language which appeals to me - there is real feeling. And the elemental theme of rain used in parallel with the meaning is also something I think works very well. There's a sort of existential feel about that which I like. And - great ending.
