Five

A Chapter by Kelsey Desmond

"Well, are you sick?"
"Something like that."
"Well, what is it?" Matt asked. "Why won't you come to work today?"
"I just...don't feel right."
Matthew took me into his arms and took a deep breath. He gave the best hugs. He smelled of too much cologne, but I liked that today. It gave me a reason to feel bad.
"Look. I'll do anything. What's wrong with work? You're the best cashier we've ever had! I just can't do it without you. I need you. How am I supposed to get through the day without someone to help me?"
I pulled him into my body for a tighter hug. "I just..." I sighed. I thought of giving up. He had been at this all morning. "Fine."
"Oh, thank you!" He pulled out of his hug and held me by the shoulders. "You know I love you, right?" He walked to the bedroom to get my coat for me.
"Yeah, I know," I whispered to myself. "That's the hard part."
"What was that?" Matt asked from the bedroom.
"Huh?" I replied, trying to act as if I didn't know what he was talking about.
"Oh, nothing. I guess I'm just hearing things."
"Guess so."
We headed out to the coffeehouse with silence the whole way there.
Once we had made it, it was a typical Friday morning. Too many people and not enough coffee.
I sighed as I looked at everyone standing around the front door getting ready for us to open up. Matthew and I walked in arm and arm.
"Finally," someone yelled from the middle of the crowd.
"It's about time," yelled another.
I took a deep breath and pulled out my keys.
Once the doors were open, people raced through like it was a finish line, leaving no man left uncrossed.
I blew out the air in my cheeks and walked in hesitantly.
"Relax," said Matthew. "What's with you this morning?"
"Nothing," I said, frustrated at first. Then, I sighed and thought a moment about the night before. Everything raced through my brain and even the memory of Enrique filled my heart and made me smile.
"Nothing at all," I said with a grin.
