Prelude

Prelude

A Chapter by Kelsey Desmond

I pushed through the yellow light just in time. I was not going to be late today. I pulled into the parking lot, typed in the four-digit pin code, and parked in the second parking space from the left. I rushed out of my car. I had no time to waste. One more tardy, and I would be fired. I had to be at my desk by 7, so I needed to run a little more. As I approached the door a kind face held it open for me.
"You're late Megan."
"Don't remind me."
I heard him chuckle as I ran up the stairs.
"...9, 10, 11, 12..." I whispered in my head as I passed each floor. "13!"
I hurried sat down in my seat at about 7:15. I opened my files and tried to look as close as I could to look like I had been working since 6.
"You're late again!" said my boss as he passed by, but didn't seem to pay too much attention.
I sighed and picked up my things. I headed down the stairs again.
"13, 12, 11, 10..."
