The great escapeA Story by keerthi_2810This is my version of how Celaena Sardothien escaped prison from the throne of glass series written by Sarah J MassMy screams were muffled since they stuffed a cloth in my mouth. Whip after whip, they kept going. I swore at them colorfully at the top of my lungs which earned me another couple more excruciating whips, “Shut up, you worthless peasant!” one of the guards mocked. After another searing whip, they left me to rot in the pain, “this is what you get for defying orders, be smart and obey next time!” he spat at me. I couldn't help but grin at the thought of how ironic those words sounded. I was forcibly sent to the salt mines after assassinating a very important man while on the orders of my master. I was well known in the streets of Endovier as the greatest assassin ever lived, little did they know I was just a teenage girl trying to make ends meet. I have spent years in this prison after getting foolishly caught and now I must pay. My back started to throb at the blistering pain; it took such an effort to just get up. I wiped my head of the sweat not caring that I probably spread blood on my forehead. I started to head back to my excuse of a bed when one of the guards that whipped me barked orders for me to get back to work; I bit back a protest knowing what would come of it. These guards did a great job on extinguishing the word ‘freedom’ out of each and every one the prisoners here. The only way you survived here was to stick together. Three years of this torture was enough for me, for months I carefully planned an escape route out of this hell-whole waiting for the right moment to dispatch it. The time has finally come, by the end of the day I would be a free woman. When dusk arrived, I head out to the entrance of the dormitories. The sentinels here exchange places in the intervals of twenty minutes. As the final seconds were coming, the nearby guard began walking off to his next station. I had approximately fifteen seconds to get out and be out of sight. I ran and ran as fast as my legs could take me; it wasn't too long before I reached the field separating me from freedom. The field goes on for miles and if that wasn't hard enough I’d have to climb an immense wall, this is why no one has ever escaped the prisons alive. I hid a makeshift bow and arrow in one of the bushes and also a knife in the next. For months I had been collecting every scrap of metal I could find for this escape. I knew I’d have to leave bodies behind to be successful in this feat. Not too long after, I heard the alarm bells indicating my escape. Panic rose up inside me like bile as I started to see small shadows on the horizon. I hadn't expected them to reach me so fast. To my utter befuddlement I saw dozens of guards on their horses racing towards me. I already took out five horses when I reached the wall. There would be even more guards patrolling here. I thought I would get out of here in silence, I didn't know I had such little time. I began shooting the makeshift arrows at the wall for footing when I started to hear warnings from the guards behind me. I began climbing the steep wall, I have always been good at climbing thus it was easy to overcome it. When I regained my footing, a couple of guards were heading my way. From a couple grew to dozens. I stabbed them left to right, I was ruthless. The thought of finally getting my freedom back itself gave me the energy to go through these soldiers as if they were mere flies. I wasn't called the greatest assassin in the world for nothing. If I didn't succeed then at least I would give an arduous fight. I jumped down the seven foot wall as the number of guards began to thin out, my shirt which was once a dirty white is now in a deep shade of scarlet. I fell with a thud on the ground and ran as if all of hell was chasing me. Minutes or hours passed by, I couldn't tell with all that adrenaline. I suddenly spotted a great black stallion tied to a tree, must be tied there by one of the guards. Boy was it my lucky day, I guess this was the universe’s way of repaying me. Without a moment’s hesitation I climbed on and rode to freedom. Surely the guards were still after me so I never once took a break. Freedom was something I took for granted. I could finally breathe without a weight on my shoulders, I was finally free. © 2014 keerthi_2810Author's Note
