Shadow

Shadow

A Poem by Mortimer Brewster

A shadow has become tethered to my soul
Slowly digging itself a hole
It is a malicious parasite that enjoys pain
It's slow erosion makes it hard to maintain
It revels in its unwavering vanity
Constantly ripping away at my humanity
I try to endure the onslaught from the specter
Hoping no more of my sanity becomes a defector
But I have no defense to hinder its progression
Not giving up yet I feel a point of concession
I feel myself being swallowed by the black
The only light left has lead me to a cul de sac
The warm glow waning into the growing abyss
Surrounded by darkness I feel it's cold kiss
I am isolated and alone with no refuge
The tears of fear create a massive deluge
I'm a nomad in my mind searching for a haven
But I'm surrounded in darkness like an everlasting cave in
I have com to the end of the line it is time to say goodbye
In one quick second a spark in the dark followed by an eternal lullaby
