Keep Going

Keep Going

A Poem by Mortimer Brewster

Life is not and everyone knows
You have to stay vigilant and ready on your toes
Everyday there is a chance something will knock you for a loop
And you just got to keep jumping through another hoop
Just when you think you have the world figured out
The world decides to make you go a different route
You try your best to stay on the straight and narrow
Even when your forced to eat only bone marrow
You scratch you claw you crawl you fight to stay a head above
This quicksand that is life and you just hope your parents gave you the right shove
To achieve your goals to acquire all your wants and need
And even though they prepare you for the world the one thing that will make you bleed
Is the loss of a loved one no matter who it may be and you want to stay near
A mother of father an aunt or uncle a sibling or significant other or who you hold dear
And even though the happiness will not last
You hold on to everything even the past
The memories of back then and what becomes later
And between your past self and future self you become a negotiator
So the life you want and the life you have become blurred
And some of your childhood dreams seem absurd
But you continue to give it everything you got
Because what good would life be if you did not
