The Encounter

The Encounter

A Chapter by Kevin A. Katz

Can society continue in this decrepit condition? Some death-dealing blow from either our politicians or our next-door neighbors dominates every waking moment of the day. At around twelve o'clock in the afternoon on a busy street in my town, I was suddenly overcome by evil demogorgons who had come to reap fear and loathing in the peoples' hearts. The leader of this vicious pack was an apelike creature who insisted that he was my leader and intended to make me appreciate it. I was thrown to the ground and stomped until I couldn't deny him any longer and I relented. However, not before I spit in his fiery eyes and told him to go to hell. He cackled and replied, "Son, I'm already here and loving every minute of it!" And as swiftly and silently as they had appeared, they disappeared into the daylight. I lay there bleeding and contemplating this wretched yet oddly profound meeting. The sunlight gently filtered down through the trees that lined the street, the birds sang with an unknown joy, and while I lay there licking my wounds, a man in a smart suit came out of the nearest building and kicked me in the ribs while telling me a story about a man who expressed his opinion.
