I woke up to the feeling that I was being watched, it wasn’t a bad feeling necessarily. It almost felt as though the presence were there to protect me and of course when I told my mom about it she just said it was probably my grandma Lucy watching over me. I pushed the thought of being watched out of my head and tried to get my eyes to adjust to the dark. All i could see was the silhouette of objects but no detail at all. I glanced over at my clock which read 3 a.m. and I forced my head into my pillow and groaned. I had been waking up at 3 just about every night the whole summer and it was starting to mess me up at work. It may have been fine if I worked at like an office job but not working at a daycare with fifteen kids running around that you have to keep track of. Besides that I was a very sleepy person, you know the one who will sleep for nine hours that night and still feel like they need to take a nap the next day. My mother always said it was because I was a “great growing girl” but I wasn’t sure if 17 year olds still grew that much.

I picked my head up from my pillow and brushed my hair from my face deciding whether I should call my best friend Haley or turn on the t.v. I figured she would think I was a pain if I kept calling her so early so I decided t.v. was the best bet. The last time I had called Haley so early she had answered with a not so happy “What do you want Alanna?” and I of course just said nothing I couldn’t sleep well and then we started to talk about everything that every girl talks about to her best friend. Thinking about that night I grabbed the remote off my nightstand and started flipping through the channels. Of course nothing good was on so I just settled for one of those CSI shows. I laughed every once in a while at how cheesy the show was. I mean who could really see a speck of paint from seven feet away? I knew I sure couldn’t so i just couldn’t imagine how they possibly could. I had 15/15 vision, which was like the best there is and top of the notch hearing. My doctor always said I should be a Navy Seal because that’d be some of the things they’d look for. I pondered on that thought. Thinking how cool it would be to go on these missions that barely anyone else could go on and do things the world could never dream of doing. The only thing that bothered me about being a seal was well the fact that they kill people. I knew I could never kill an animal let alone a person. My cousin had taken me hunting one time when I was around eight years old and tried to shoot a deer. When the deer got close I ran out of our hut screaming “Run Bambi! Run!” and that was the last of my hunting trips.

I started dozing off into a dreamless sleep when a loud banging sound and scream woke me back up. I jumped out of bed and stumbled over a pair of shoes I had laying on my floor. I continued to hear screams and loud footsteps that sounded like they were heading towards my room. I scurried quickly under my bed and held my breath, tears stinging my eyes. My heart raced and a million thoughts flooded my mind. The first was if the woman screaming was my mother. It had been a blood curdling screams and I hoped that she was okay. When all the noise had subsided I contemplated crawling out from under my bed when my bedroom door slung open. I covered my mouth trying to contain a scream that was ready to break loose. I couldn’t see past my bed skirt but I could hear footsteps moving toward my bed. Not only did it sound like one person in my room but two or three. I closed my eyes and prayed to God that he would save me and that’s when hands reached under the bed and grabbed my arms. I screamed as loud as I could and began kicking. He held onto me tightly but I persisted until I realized there was no way I could win, but I couldn’t just give in that quickly. I kept fighting and the dark room around me swirled. He was spinning, trying to hold onto me tightly, but I could tell his grip was starting to loosen. That’s when I saw my chance. I bit down onto his arm as hard as I could and he dropped me to the floor whimpering from the pain. I struggled to get to my feet and starting running out of my room when something hit the back of my head and everything went black.

“Well that was pretty easy.” The guy said chuckling. I winced at the way his laugh sounded and thought about opening my eyes. But I was too afraid to see who my captors were and I didn’t think the pain in the back of my head would allow me to open my eyes anyway.

“Yeah, sure it was. You couldn’t even keep her contained. If it weren’t for me she probably would’ve gotten hurt or got away.” Another voice said. His voice showed a hint of sadness and fear. But it also had a whimsical sound to it that made me peak out of the corner of my eye. I almost gasped at what I saw. The guy standing to my right wasn’t at all scary or ugly but very handsome. He had cropped black hair that made his deep blue eyes stand out on his face. His skin was bright and vibrant, very young looking and flawless. I almost wanted to keep peaking at him until he noticed me looking. “Well hello there.” He said coming closer to me. I squeezed my eyes tight and felt my face redden with embarrassment. He put a hand on my shoulder and I cringed at the warmth of it and he pulled back. I tried to pretend that I was still out of it but I knew he wouldn’t believe it.

“Is she awake?” Someone who sounded almost like a child asked.

“Yeah she is, but I think we should leave the meet and greet for later. She seems very tired and she’s going to have a stressful week.” The guy who was closest to me said.

“But Remo, you promised I could meet her!” The young boy said sounding very upset. I still tried to act out of it but I almost felt like I really was. My mind and body was tired and I had the worst headache I had ever felt in my life. I knew I needed to get up and try to fight again but I couldn’t and I knew I needed to scope out my surroundings first if I wanted to make a clean break for it.

“Lowell, I just told you that I will let you meet her later. She’s just really tired right now and needs rest. I still promise that you can meet her, it just won’t be today.” The guy who I’m assumed was named Remo said. “Oh and Daren can you please take Lowell to the kitchen to get some breakfast. I’m going to stay here a while, but Ill be down in a bit.”

“Alright, can do. Just play nice with her alright?” Daren said chuckling again and I had to try hard not to wince.

“Yeah, just go.” Remo said and I heard footsteps as the two left the room. I heard a door close and then a slight cough come from Remo beside me. “You can stop faking now.”

I didn’t say a word and I didn’t open my eyes. I didn’t even know if I could open my eyes. My head hurt so bad and the pressure made it feel like it was going to explode. Not only did my head hurt though, my whole body hurt. My legs felt like I had ran a marathon, my arms felt like they had been hit with mallots, and the rest of my body just felt like crap. I was definitely going to have bruises everywhere and I knew that as soon as I got myself out of there and to the police they would get more than a life sentence.

“Look, I know you’re scared but you shouldn’t be. No one here will hurt you. I’m not going to hurt you and I definitely won’t let anyone else hurt you. If you would please open your eyes and quite pretending maybe I can tell you a little bit about what’s going on.” He said breaking me away from my thoughts. I contemplated what he said and decided it was probably best to just listen. He said he wasn’t going to hurt me right? I opened my eyes and all I could see were blurring grey walls and my head began to pound harder than before. I closed my eyes quickly and pushed my hands to my head hoping to stop the pain. “Here, let me go turn off the lights.” I nodded slightly and I could hear him walking quickly to the light switch to turn off the lights. I opened my eyes again, more slowly than the time before and all I saw was darkness and the faint outline of objects and my head didn’t hurt as bad as it did before. “Is that better?” A voice said beside me. I looked up but I could only see the faint silhouette of him.

“Yeah, its a little better.” I whispered, my voice hoarse and shaky.

“Is it ok if I sit down?” He asked and I gave a slight nod. He sat down next to me and that was when I realized I was laying in a bed. A rather comfy bed actually. The bed sunk in a little bit where he was sitting and I could tell his face was turned towards me. “I’m sorry that you don’t feel good and that you are hurt. Nothing was supposed to happen the way it did. I can give you something for your headache if you’d like.”

“No.” I managed to get out. I definitely wasn’t going to take any kind of medicine some guy who kidnapped me had to offer. How stupid would I be if I accepted that?

“Are you sure?” He asked gently and I nodded my head assuring him i didn’t want what he had to offer. He paused for a moment before beginning to speak again. “Can I touch your head?”

“Why?” I asked sort of alarmed. I didn’t really want him to touch me and the thought of the touch of his warm hand against my skin again made me shutter.

“There’s this thing my mom used to do for me when I had a headache and it really will make feel better. I promise.” He said sincerely and I debated whether I should let him or not. When I didn’t speak right away he turned toward me and put his hands on my head quickly. I jumped a bit but my body was still too sore to do too much. His hands filled my head with warmth as he started to massage my temples. I could feel the pressure begin to release and the pain started to dull. He then pulled away and the cold air hit my face again but my headache was gone. “Feel better?”

“How’d you do that?” I asked quietly trying to figure out how he could just rub my temples a little and completely rid me of my headache. Every time I got a headache I would rub my temples and the result was never anywhere near what he had just done.

“Well, like I said my mom taught it to me. I always thought it worked so i thought maybe it would help you, you looked like you were in a lot of pain.”

“I was.” I said and then winced from the pain in my chest and in my throat. I assumed my throat was hurting from screaming earlier but I wasn’t completely sure.

“Do you want me to leave you to get some rest or would you like me to stay?” He asked then added, “You know and we can talk a little bit.”

“Stay.” Was all I could manage to get out and I watched him lean back against the wall behind us.

“My name is Remo.” He said quietly and then turned his face to look at me. By then my eyes had sort of adjusted to the dark so I could almost see all of his features. His dark hair and beautifully shaped eyes. It was hard to not think about how handsome he was and try to focus on how he had kidnapped me. “What’s your name?”

“Why?” I said wondering why he would ask such a silly question. He obviously took me for a reason so he had to have known my name.

“Well you know my name so I’d like to know yours.” He said.

“Y-you kidnapped me so shouldn’t you know my name?” I managed to choke out and I could see his body tense a bit.

“Ouch.” He said shaking his head and squinting his eyes. “I’m just trying to be nice Alanna.”

“So you do know my name.”

“Yeah I do, obviously.” He said a little bit agitated. “Look I didn’t want to kidnap you so please don’t blame me I just did what I was told.”

“What you were told?” I asked. “Well who told you?”

“Brennus and Briella said that you were probably ready to be brought back so we went and got you.” He said sighing. “It wasn’t supposed to go down the way it did and I didn’t mean for you to get hurt. We just figured it would be easier than it was.”

“What did you expect? Did you think you could just walk in and say hey Mrs. Foster can we take your daughter? Is that what you thought would happen?” I asked sort of getting upset. Why did they have to take me? My mom was probably crying her eyes out at home with police searching everywhere and that’s when I remembered my mom. I hadn’t thought about her that whole time. I just thought about how much pain I was in and not about what mattered most. “Is my mom okay?”  I asked before he could get anything out.

“She’s fine.” He said in a sad tone.

“Are you sure?” I asked but I wasn’t really sure if I would believe his answer anyways.

“I’m positive.” He said with a reassuring tone.

“Well who is this Brenna and Briella?”

“Brennus and Briella?” He asked and I nodded. “They are the ones who own this house. They are really nice and you will love them but that’s all I can really say for now. They will talk to you and fill you in on everything in a few days.”

“In a few days? Where are they?” I asked wanting to get filled in right then. Did they really expect me to just sit there willingly without knowing what was going on?

“They are on an important business trip and should get here Wednesday evening.” He said. “I can answer some questions if you’d like. I just can’t tell you everything.”

“Why do they want me here?” Was the first question I could think of and while he thought for a moment I thought about some other questions I would like to ask.

“I can’t tell you.” He finally answered and I sighed.

     “Who knocked me out?”

“Me.” He said and then hesitated before finishing his sentence. “I didn’t knock you out with force I just did a little hypnotism and I guess the after effects of it is what gave you a headache. I’m not sure why though, that usually doesn’t happen.”

“Yeah well it did and it hurt like hell.”

“I know and I’m sorry. How does the rest of you feel? You put up quite a fight earlier.”

“I-I’m okay I guess. Just a little sore.” I said feeling a little proud of myself. I did do pretty good compared to that six foot four muscular guy.

“I’m sorry about that. Daren didn’t really understand the whole we don’t hurt her part. Plus, I don’t think he really expected you to put up that much of a fight.” He said and started smiling. “I’m actually sort of surprised too. You did really good.”

“Uh, thank you.” I said looking up at him and he smiled again. His smile was breathtaking and made me feel warm inside. “Why are you being so nice to me?”

“Well,” He started to say then a smile broke out across his face and he leaned back and closed his eyes before he continued. “Lets just say there’s a lot of reasons. That I may or may not tell you later.”

“You aren’t very good at giving answers you know.” I said.

“I know and I’m sorry. There’s just a lot going on and most of it isn’t my place to tell you.”

“Okay.” I said yawning, which made every part of my body ache and i let out a little whimper from the pain.

“If you would like to rest I can leave.” He said and i thought about it for a minute. If he left I could look around the room and look for a place to escape. Although Remo was very sweet and really seemed pretty interesting I was more worried about my safety than some hot guy that may or may not kill me later.

“Uh, yeah I guess so.” I said trying not to sound like I was anxious for him to leave.

“Okay well if you need anything whisper my name okay?” He asked and I nodded my head before thinking about what he had said to me.

“Whisper?” I asked after I thought about it.
