A Dangerous Safety

A Dangerous Safety

A Poem by K. Bridgid

Just as her lips begin to form a smile

A whisper fills her ear

It speaks nasty words

“You aren’t allowed to be happy”

“You are weak”

“Nobody cares”

Her legs do the thinking for her

They take her to comfort

Only the relief isn’t truly safe

For in this instance

The sense of security is a shiny silver object

It is safe in the most dangerous of ways

The door slams

She turns the lock

Finally in her sanctuary

“You know where it is”

“You know you deserve it”

“Listen to us”

She obeys the voices

And opens the drawer

There it lays

She lifts up her shirt

Revealing all the scars on her hips

And adds to the collection
