A Poem by mikayla baldwin

humble complexion
complex personality
her beauty is unknown
her attitude is uncanny

she loves me with her everything
even when she doesnt have much to give
but i'll take whatever i can get
hold it close to my heart
because even though we arent blood
we are kin

if i walk a thousand miles
she runs a thousand and one
if she hums a sweet melody
i'll beat a sweeter rhythm

the songs of our pasts
complement one another
can be a compilation
an album
pictures of a better time
when i saw her daily
and my stupid jokes drove her crazy
and her funny jokes made me angry

it kills me to watch
such a delicate girl
endure the most gruesome feelings
knowing that i cannot extinguish the
flame that smolders her so

she left me, a while ago
with only ember in my pocket
khaki shorts covered in soot
blisters create a pattern on my legs
reminding me that
as she burns
i do too

her heart is a burning candle
with only so much wax to melt
as soon as she returns to me
i will be her douter

i will extinguish
the demons she prays
would leave
i'd give her
all the water
in every sea
if the burns could be soothed
and the she i once knew
would return to me

That last stanza hit me hardest. Lovely. Great job with this one. :)

extinguishing her heart's flame... as a douter - powerful image there.
love, sacrifice, remembrance, and returning... life as we dream and wish.
