Mourning After

Mourning After

A Poem by Kaylee April

Last night shook like a ragdoll
Last night left the empty bottles
Last night opened the bathroom door
and spit screams onto the bathroom floor

Last year put a fist through the mattress
Last year alerted the authorities
Last year put a knife between two boys
and brandished threats into the quivering air

Last semester broke a shaver apart
Last semester put words in her mouth
Last semester dropped exaggerated tears
onto the lonely floor

Today says "get the sallow off of your face, drink some icy water, fill the space"

Morning comes to motherly sooth
Washes over your body with a milky mood
and soon it's all a fearful dream to you
