AdrienA Chapter by kaya mannerI followed her into the building. I forgot how fun it was to bother her when she was annoyed. She’s like a ticking time bomb. It wasn’t until she was about to go into her english class that I grabbed her arm and pulled her into me. “Look,” I started, wrapping my arm around her waist. “I’m sorry. Just let me make it up to you.” I made the pleading puppy dog face that always made her give in. She scoffed, pushing away from me. “You’re gonna be late to class.” I knew she was giving in just by the shift in her tone. She could never look me in the eye when she was giving into me. “This is my class.” I smirked, going around her and into into the classroom. I could feel the utter hatred towards me that was radiating from her. It was hilarious. * * *
The day went on like that. After English, I walked her to every other class, against her wishes of course. This was too much fun. She gave me the bird every time I tried talking to her. She even slammed the door in my face when I dropped her off at one of the science labs. When the lunch bell rang, I was sitting right outside the east wing building. When she came out, she tried to run but I caught her in my arms, holding her from behind “Let me go, you idiot.” She laughed as I hugged her tighter. She managed to pry my arms away and smiled down at the ground, tucking her hair behind her left ear. She had some purple paint in her hair. “What the hell is wrong with you?” “Didn’t we establish that we both have a few screws loose.” I laughed. I got down on one knee, my back to her and my palms facing up. “C’mon, get on.” “What?” I heard the disbelief in her voice. “No way.” I stayed that way for a moment, suddenly feeling some pressure on my back, jean clad legs wrapping around my waist and two frail arms wrapping around my neck. “You are so bi-polar.” I carried her around like that, heading towards the lunch area. Back in when we were freshmen, people looked at us funny whenever we did this. Now, its kinda normal around here. Well it used to be before summer. But I wanted her to think everything was normal between us, at least while she still had the chance to. I didn’t care but she’s under my protection, meaning she’d have to trust me. I wasn’t about to be killed, again, for not doing my job. She still wore the same Pink Chiffon perfume, the scent that I used to distinguish her from all the other girls who were dressed as Starfire at a Halloween party we went to in 7th grade. She was the best looking Starfire there though...but that’s besides the point. I searched the tables for Ollie, the one cheerleader I knew that would even share the same breathing space with anyone who wasn’t on the squad. There she was, sitting at the usual table by the weeping willow tree, some guy from the baseball team sitting on the table next to her as she sipped what I guessed to be her usual french vanilla latte. “...C’mon, it’ll be fun.” The guy pleaded as we got closer to the table. “Cam, I told you. I’m busy.” Ollie said, rolling her eyes and widening them as she saw me walking over to them with Eva on my back. “Hey baby.” Eva got down off my back, knowing what was about to go down, as Ollie came over to me with her arms open. I pulled her in for a hug and kept both arms around her waist as she kissed my cheek and looked at that Cam guy. “Now do you get it?’ Cam shrugged and walked away. Once he was far enough away, we pushed away from each other in disgust and Eva laughed as she took a seat on Ollie’s side. “You two are ridiculous.” That was a usual routine for me and Ollie. We would pretend to be dating each other whenever she was being pursued by a guy she wasn’t interested but in reality, I didn’t like cheerleaders and she hated sarcasm. “You need to find a new boy toy.” I said as I sat in front of Eva. “Or here’s an idea, get an actual boyfriend.” She rolled her eyes. “So I see you two are back on good terms.” She looked at Eva with a grin. “Eva was really torn up over the summer without her ‘best guy friend’.” Eva threw a grape from her lunch bag at Ollie, blushing. “Shuddup Ollie, no I wasn’t.” She looked up at me through her bangs, I was kinda surprised about her short hair. “You pulled a jerk move though.” “Well,” I propped my head onto my palms. “If you’d come with me after school, I could explain everything.” “Ooooo,” Ollie’s eyes widened as she leaned towards us. “A date? Well at least Adrien’s being honest with himself.” She stole one of Eva’s grapes. “I don’t get why you don’t just admit you love each other already.” “Eww, no we don’t.” We both said in unison and disgust, our usual reaction. “Whatever.” Ollie said, plugging her headphones in. “So Eva-” She already had her headphones in as well. She was reading some book, holding her sleeves over her wrists. I couldn’t help but stare at her. Even with short hair she was still disgustingly beautiful, to the point where it drove me insane. What did they want with her? Of all the people in the world, why her? When the final bell rang at the end of the day, I waited for Eva at Ollie’s car. She was gonna hear me out, whether she liked it or not. As they approached the car, Eva stopped to roll her eyes in distaste before walking past me and going for the car door handle. I grabbed her arm gently. “Let go of me.” She growled. I made the puppy eyes again. “C’mon Eva, please just come with me.” She gave Ollie a pleading look then sighed in defeat as Ollie just got in the car. “Fine.” I grinned, knowing that Ollie was just dying to see me and Eva together. She’d been saying that we’d make a cute couple since 8th grade, which I found absolutely absurd. Eva followed quietly behind me, her arms crossed over her chest, dragging her feet as we walked over to my truck. I opened the passenger door, helping her up into the truck. I tried to give her a friendly smile but she just stared coldly out the windshield with her headphones plugged in. Since when was she so cold towards me? Well, I mean I did ignore her for a whole summer but geez talk about giving a guy the cold shoulder. “Hey,” I always had a problem with her giving me the silent treatment, she could be such a child for someone with the IQ almost as high as Einstein’s. I pulled an earphone from her ear and she glared at me with a look that gave the expression if looks could kill a whole new meaning. “What’s your deal?” “Gee, I don’t know maybe it’s the fact that you don’t talk to me for a whole summer and then drag me off against my will to some unknown location expecting me to be all butterflies and rainbows about the whole situation.” She looked back out the window, arms crossing over her chest. “Where the hell have you been Adrien?” I bit the inside of my cheek, how was I gonna explain to her that I couldn’t go anywhere near her without wanting to drain her dry of her blood for the first month of summer and the other month was spent despising her very being for being the reason that I wanted her blood so badly. I remained silent as I pulled out of the school parking lot and onto the freeway. I wanted to put a stop to the really awkward silence but her headphones were drowning me out and she just kept staring out the window. We went on like that for ten minutes until I pulled over in front of Drenwood Mall. She looked back at me with a raised eyebrow as I got out of the car and went around to open her door. “What are we doing here?” I winked as I took her hand. “You’ll see.” © 2014 kaya manner |
